Collage has long been an art form and tool of artistic expression, that has been recently resurrected due to digital photo manipulation tools like Photoshop. With technology, elements and materials can be combined and assembled in an almost limitless fashion.
My favorite element of creating collages is the possibility of mixing and matching elements from different worlds and combining different meanings into one, completely new simulacra.
But that’s just a single opinion. There are also collage artists that love collage because of the ‘shadow games’ that this technique offers. They mix shapes and textures and make illustrations look 3D, as if they are almost coming out of your screen. While I can’t tell you how to make the perfect collage for your purposes (a big part of this comes down to your preferences and passions in collage), I can give you some good tips that will help you to start your collage adventure or improve the skills you already have. Regardless of your goals with collage, Photoshop is a perfect digital tool to use for this.<span><a name='more'></a></span>
<h2><strong>The Pen tool in Photoshop: Your best friend for collage making</strong></h2>
My collage adventure began a couple years ago. What was at the time serious hobby, evolved into a job that I love. Both my “better half” and a business partner of mine were creating analogue collages and it inspired me to also create in that manner, but instead using digital tools. I found it quite fun — I could always draw and paint well, but paper and scissors just weren’t my thing. I decided to focus exclusively on a digital collage.
Once you learn the details of the process, you’ll see that the steps are quite simple and easy to understand. There are plenty of options of how to cut elements out (from the most time consuming and precise to the easy and quick ones), so it’s up to you which process you’ll choose — there is no such thing as a wrong decision! The most important thing when doing collages is cutting out elements and having fun with mixing them freely. This is also the most fun part of the whole process!
<h2><strong>How to choose and find the right photos, and ensure licenses are correct</strong></h2>
Once you’ve mastered the Pen tool, you are ready to start making collages. Regardless of whether I am working on something elaborate or something minimalist, each project is a multi-stage process. Truthfully, in the whole process of creating a collage, finding photos that will fit your idea is the most significant part of the workflow. It’s important to keep in mind that, sometimes, we have specific images in mind that we want to use, which don’t exist in the real world (unless you arrange a photoshoot) or are inappropriately licensed (meaning you just can’t use them).
Confirming the licensing of images you want to use is essential. Many popular websites don’t verify the licenses on the images they are using, and even if a website claims that all photos are free to use, that may not actually be the case. If you use an image from a website that violates intellectual property, you are ultimately responsible for the mistake -and that could be costly. The best way to avoid this headache is by using images from stock websites — Adobe Stock is one of the most affordable options for Creative Cloud users. There are over 200 million high-quality, curated, royalty-free photos, vectors, illustrations, templates, 3D assets, video, motion graphics templates, and audio available.
I quickly discovered the Pen tool within Photoshop - which I suggest you start using immediately! This is an extremely useful tool because I can follow the shape of the image, adjust or manipulate the Pen tool line any time it’s selected, and I no longer have to worry that I’ll mistakenly select something that I don’t want. The entire cutting out process goes much faster and is more precise because I can curve the line and adjust it to the shape of the object I intend to cut.
The best way to learn how to do this effectively with the Pen tool is to follow a very simple shape - a letter like‘e’ or ‘s’ would be the best to practice – once you’ve completed that letter, you can start cutting out elements for your colleges. Another tool that’s quite helpful is the Magic Eraser tool. It helps you quickly remove the background (as it’s smooth, isolated). It’s not as precise as the Pen, especially when you’re working on big prints that will reveal every single detail of your work, but still comes in handy.
All of this may be time consuming but is worth the effort. You are in control of the element, which gives the feeling of an analog workflow, which I like.
<h2><strong>Collages are an endless tool for self-expression</strong></h2>
I continue to find collage making both exciting and, at times, touching. Collage shows you the real power of graphic design, taking elements and using them to tell a story in a new and impactful way, and the possibilities of collage expression are endless. You can create anything you can dream up when you master the basic tools in Photoshop.
The best way to improve is to just keep creating and working. I have been working with collage techniques for several years and it feels like I discover something new in Photoshop every day. Maybe it doesn’t make me an expert, and maybe there’s an option to cut out elements even faster and precise, but there’s always a chance that I’ll develop those skills tomorrow. With collage, anything is possible.

If you want to code using Visual Studio Code but you're using a Chromebook, it's not a problem at all.
It's easy to dismiss Chromebooks and while Google's laptops don't use an OS on the same scale as Windows 10, but the platform has been maturing over time into something lightweight but still well featured.
And with Chromebooks becoming more and more popular, particularly in the budget space, there are more people looking to do more things with them. And that includes coding. Yes, coding.
Microsoft's free Visual Studio Code is an incredible piece of software for coding and the good news is that it's now usable on a Chromebook.
Here's what you need to know.<span><a name='more'></a></span>
<h2><strong>Making sure Linux is enabled on your Chromebook</strong></h2>
What makes the magic happen is the Crostini Linux container on Chrome OS which will allow you to install the Linux version of Visual Studio Code on your Chromebook.
If you don't already have that enabled, it's really straightforward.
<ol>
<li>Open Settings.</li>
<li>Locate Linux (Beta) in the sidebar.</li>
<li>Click Turn on.<img class="aligncenter" src="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/xlarge/public/field/image/2020/09/vs-code-chromebook-install1.jpg" /></li>
<li>At the next window, click Next.<img src="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/xlarge/public/field/image/2020/09/vs-code-chromebook-install2.jpg" /></li>
<li>Give your Linux install a username.</li>
<li>Decide how much space you want to dedicate from your internal storage to it.<img src="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/xlarge/public/field/image/2020/09/vs-code-chromebook-install3.jpg" /></li>
<li>Click Install.<img src="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/xlarge/public/field/image/2020/09/vs-code-chromebook-install4.jpg" /></li>
<li>The Linux container will now begin to download and install itself on your Chromebook. You'll know it's finished when a terminal window pops up and then you can move on to the next step.</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>How to install Visual Studio Code for Linux on Chrome OS</strong></h2>
Once Linux is enabled on your Chromebook getting up and running with Visual Studio Code is beyond simple.
<ol>
<li>Head to the Visual Studio Code website.</li>
<li>Download the .deb Debian package.
<img src="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/w830/public/field/image/2020/09/vs-code-download.jpg" /></li>
<li>Open the Files app.</li>
<li>Locate the downloaded package.<img src="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/xlarge/public/field/image/2020/09/vs-code-chromebook-install5.jpg" /></li>
<li>Right-click and select Install with Linux (Beta).</li>
<li>Click Install.<img src="https://www.windowscentral.com/sites/wpcentral.com/files/styles/xlarge/public/field/image/2020/09/vs-code-chromebook-install6.jpg" /></li>
</ol>
From here on out you'll be able to launch Visual Studio Code from the app drawer like any other application on your Chromebook once the Linux installer has finished. You can also launch it from the terminal simply by typing code.
When downloading the installer make sure you grab the right version for your Chromebook. The September 2020 update of Visual Studio Code added support for ARM-based Linux machines, which means you can now use it on devices like the Lenovo Chromebook Duet. If you are on an ARM Chromebook, download the ARM version of the installer, if you're on an AMD or Intel Chromebook, you want the x64 installer.
The stock install of Visual Studio Code is deliberately barebones and lightweight, so you'll need to spec it out to your requirements with extensions. Fortunately there's a host of these both from Microsoft and third-parties that you can install right from within Visual Studio Code. You're literally a few clicks away from starting to code.

The Blur Gallery in Adobe Photoshop is different from the Blur Filters we've covered previously (both are found in Photoshop's Filter menu). When you select Blur Gallery, Photoshop displays another dropdown menu with five Blur options: Field, Iris, Tilt-Shift, Path, and Spin Blur. These filters are much more interactive than regular Blur Filters, with live previews and on-image controls, including options to create Bokeh effects.
<h3><strong>Blur Gallery Tools<span><a name='more'></a></span></strong></h3>
To use Blur Gallery features, open a file, then use the Lasso tool or the Magic Wand to select the area you want to smooth or soften. It works best if you cut out the selected area, paste it back in as a new layer, then ensure that this layer is active in the Layers panel. The blur will affect the entire selected area unless you use the Pins to select specific sections.
Choose Filter > Blur Gallery > Path Blur (or any of the other four Blur options) to open the Blur Gallery panel, which displays all five of the Gallery Blurs mentioned above, plus three Effects tabs that provide options for Bokeh, Motion, and Noise. Each Gallery Blur and each of the three Effects offer different adjustment tools to fine-tune the special effects on your images.
With the on-screen controls, you can see what the effects are doing to your image as they happen. For example, the main control is a circle with a dot inside called a Pin (the cursor looks like a pin or tack). Click different areas on the image to create multiple Pins, which are potential blur areas. Click the dark line inside the circle and drag it around the circle to increase or decrease the blur effect. You can also use the slider bar for this same function.
<h3><strong>Field Blur</strong></h3>
Use this effect to illustrate a graduated blur effect (similar to a gradient, but using only the colors in the selected area).
Select the layer in the Layers panel that you want to affect. Choose Filter > Blur Gallery > Field Blur. Click the location or locations where you want to blur the image. Use your cursor to select each Blur Pin individually, then drag the spinner inside the circle to blur the different areas.
We chose an image of a field of yellow tulips, deciding to create one different from the rest by changing its color, then blurring out the rest. We colored one of the tulips a bright coral-orange. We outlined it with the Lasso tool, then inverted the layers: Select > Inverse to make the background the active layer.
We moved the Pin up into the sky area, then dragged the line inside the circle until the background was fuzzy but still recognizable.
<em><strong>NOTE</strong>: Press the Delete key to remove individual pins, or click the checkbox to toggle check on and off. Off cancels the current blur effect. The Escape key cancels the Blur Gallery.</em>
<h3><strong>Iris Blur</strong></h3>
Use the Iris Blur effect to blur out everything on the canvas except the selected area.
Choose Filter > Blur Gallery > Iris Blur. Position the blur Pin on the section you want to highlight so the focus is clear and sharp. Use the handles to drag the ellipses around, change its shape, increase or decrease its size. You can place multiple Pins on the canvas to “stop” the blur in all the selected areas and just blur what’s left of the background.
We chose a photo with seven candles on a table, then used the Iris Pin selector to create an ellipse around the center candle. We set the blur effect to 100, which faded and hazed out everything except the selected center candle. Unlike the Field Blur, which works best with multiple Pins or multiple layers, the Iris Blur reacts to everything not Pinned.
<h3><strong>Tilt-Shift Blur</strong></h3>
Photographers use tilt-shift lenses to photograph panoramic views, to modify the scale of an area so it appears miniature, to correct vertical lines that converge, and to blur specific areas of an image.
In Photoshop, the effect is much the same. A tilt-shift lens alters perspective. It looks like it adds a rectangular window (or strip) of sharpened focus to a blurred photo. But, in fact, it maintains the sharp focus inside the window and blurs out the rest in a graduated fade.
In our example, we decided to focus on the cabin and make the trees, mountains, and the sky on top gradually fade from sharp to hazy; then phase out the water and reflections on the bottom to simulate an eerie, ghostly feeling.
We divided the image into five sections, maintained the sharp center, and fuzzed out the rest. We chose 144 pixels for the Blur and 55 for the Distortion.
<h3><strong>Path Blur</strong></h3>
The Path Blur does the obvious: It creates a blurred area along a selected path that simulates motion. When you select Filter > Blur Gallery > Path Blur, a line with an arrow and a large pin dot appear on the right, a small pin dot appears in the center, and another large pin dot appears on the left.
If you drag the pin dots in any direction, the line that connects them bends and arcs up, down, left, right, or in and out of spirals, hooks, and loops. If you click the pin dot first (a smaller dot appears inside the pin dot), then you can drag a straight line in any direction. You can also use the pin tack cursor to add more pin dots to the image, which creates multiple blur paths.
For our example, we moved the line of pin dots down to the side of the train, then stretched it out from the engine to the caboose, following the line of the tracks to simulate a fast moving train soaring down the tracks at high speed. We set the Basic Blur Speed to 50 percent, the Taper to 0, checked the Centered Blur box, and chose an End Point Speed of 200 pixels. This provided an illusion of a speeding train, which is the effect we wanted.
<em><strong>NOTE: </strong>If the Basic “Path” Blur doesn’t provide the effect you seek, try the Rear Sync Flash Blur, which emulates that flash effect that fires at the end of an exposure.</em>
<h3><strong>Spin Blur</strong></h3>
The Spin Blur is, basically, the same as the Radial Blur, except the Blur Angle is measured in degrees from 0 to 360. When you choose Filter > Blur Gallery > Spin Blur, a circle appears in the middle of your image with tiny dots at north, south, east, and west; and pinpoints appear just inside the circle at the same locations.
Use the dots to reshape and rotate the outer circle. Use the square handles to size it, and the pinpoint dots to reshape the inside, which is the area that spins.
We chose to spin a couple of tires. We selected a Blur Angle of 20 degrees for the first and a Blur Angle of 55 degrees for the second to illustrate the different angles and the precise control one has over manipulating the spinning radius.
<h3><strong>Gallery Effects Tools</strong></h3>
<h4><strong>Bokeh Effects</strong></h4>
As described in the second paragraph, the Bokeh effects in our example create smooth, silky circles of light with soft, glowing edges.
Notice that the background lights around the ornament in our Christmas photo are gold and white only, and appear as confetti-like dots on the tree. After we applied an Iris Blur of 102 pixels, with 69 percent of Bokeh Light, 56 percent of Bokeh color, and a Light Range of 210, the ornament now glows on a background of soft, colorful lights.
<h3><strong>Motion Effects</strong></h3>
These effects work only on Spin Blur and Path Blur. There must be a path or radius of motion to get Motion Effects.
The process is simple. Open a file, choose Filter > Blur Gallery > Path Blur or Filter > Blur Gallery > Spin Blur. Use the Pinpoints, the dots, and the handles to size and position your path or radius around your object (or across the entire image). Select a Blur Angle, then use the Motion features to create some amazing effects.
We used a 22-point star to create two very different Motion effects.
We started with a Spin Blur. The first one has a Blur Angle of 360 degrees with 68 percent Strobe Strength, three Strobe Flashes, and a Strobe Flash duration of two degrees.
The second image has a Blur Angle of 50 degrees with 100 percent Strobe Strength, four Strobe Flashes, and a Strobe Flash duration of one degree.
Both designs look amazing, but so different. One looks like a flaming star, and the other looks like a sunburst. The Motion Effects completely change from one setting to another.
<h3><strong>Noise Effects</strong></h3>
Noise is another word for grain, or a grainy effect.
You can add noise anywhere on your photos, and there are several ways to do it. This effect is used with the Blur Gallery effects so you can add back some detail or texture to a blurred section.
We first used the Iris Blur (set to 200) to blend out the background of a red tulip. There was nothing essentially wrong with this result, but after a few days of looking at it, we decided to give the image more depth.
We used the Noise Effect in the Blur Gallery to add some needed texture to the background. We added 90-percent grain at a size of 75 percent with 100-percent roughness, 40-percent color, and 35-percent highlights. The dull, flat background was transformed to a finely textured finish.

Creating a bootable macOS Catalina USB install drive is an effective way to generate a clean installation of macOS on your Mac. This hands-on tutorial will work with both the macOS Catalina developer beta, the macOS Catalina public beta, and the final version of macOS Catalina scheduled to launch later this fall. Follow our easy-to-use step-by-step video tutorial for the details.
<h2><strong>Flash drive</strong></h2>
Before beginning you’ll need to acquire a USB flash drive. In the age of USB-C, it’s preferable that you use a USB flash drive with a USB-C connection if possible.
You’ll want a USB drive with at least 8GB of storage, but having more storage is never a bad thing. I recommend this <a href="https://amzn.to/3nq8Ers">SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive USB Type-C Flash Drive</a>. It’s affordable, and comes with both a USB-C connection and a traditional USB-A connection. This is the drive that I’ve been using and my experience with it has been great.
The drive comes in 16, 32, 64, 128, and 256GB storage varieties. If you want a drive with extra storage, then it makes sense to opt for a higher tier, but if you just plan on using it as a USB installer, then 16GB should be plenty.
Make sure that there’s nothing contained on the drive that you need, because this process will completely delete the contents of the drive.
<h2><strong>How to create a bootable macOS Catalina 10.15 USB install drive</strong></h2>
<strong>Step 1:</strong> Download macOS Catalina. After Catalina 10.15 launches later this fall, you’ll be able to download it directly from the Mac App Store. Until then, you can download the macOS Catalina developer beta from <em><a href="https://redirect.viglink.com/?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_160220425265013&key=c1c7d488bb2df8a8b659d5d41634d304&libId=kg1iiexv010023dg000DL6uz2cs67gv6v&loc=https%3A%2F%2F9to5mac.com%2F2019%2F06%2F27%2Fhow-to-create-a-bootable-macos-catalina-10-15-usb-install-drive-video%2F&v=1&out=https%3A%2F%2Fdeveloper.apple.com%2Fdownload%2F&title=How%20to%20create%20a%20bootable%20macOS%20Catalina%2010.15%20USB%20install%20drive%20%5BVideo%5D&txt=Apple%E2%80%99s%20developer%20portal">Apple’s developer portal</a></em>, or download the macOS Catalina public beta via <em><a href="https://redirect.viglink.com/?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_160220426880915&key=c1c7d488bb2df8a8b659d5d41634d304&libId=kg1iiexv010023dg000DL6uz2cs67gv6v&loc=https%3A%2F%2F9to5mac.com%2F2019%2F06%2F27%2Fhow-to-create-a-bootable-macos-catalina-10-15-usb-install-drive-video%2F&v=1&out=https%3A%2F%2Fbeta.apple.com%2Fsp%2Fbetaprogram%2F&title=How%20to%20create%20a%20bootable%20macOS%20Catalina%2010.15%20USB%20install%20drive%20%5BVideo%5D&txt=Apple%E2%80%99s%20public%20beta%20website">Apple’s public beta website.</a></em>
<strong>Step 2:</strong> After successfully downloading macOS Catalina, the installer will auto-launch. Close the installer.
<strong>Step 3:</strong> Open Finder → <em>Applications and right-click on Install macOS Catalina Beta</em> and choose <strong><em>Show Package Contents</em></strong>.
<strong>Step 4:</strong> Open Contents → <em>Resources</em>.
<strong>Step 5:</strong> Launch a Terminal window via <em>Applications → Utilities → Terminal.</em>
<strong>Step 6:</strong> In the Terminal window type <em>sudo followed by a space.</em>
<strong>Step 7:</strong> Drag <strong><em>createinstallmedia</em></strong> to the Terminal window from the Finder location noted in Step 4.
<strong>Step 8:</strong> Type <em>--volume followed by a space.</em>
Step 9: <em>Open Finder → Go → Go To Folder…</em>
Step 10: In the <em>‘Go to the folder’</em> box type<em><strong> /Volumes</strong></em> and click Go.
Step 11: Connect your USB drive to your Mac, and it should appear in the Finder window.
Step 12: <em>Drag the USB flash drive volume</em> into the Terminal window.
Step 13: Press <strong><em>Return</em></strong> on the keyboard to submit the full command and enter your password when prompted.
Step 14: Type a <em><strong>‘y’</strong></em> to continue when prompted, and press return on the keyboard.
Step 15: The install process will commence by erasing the contents of your USB drive, and afterwards, copying the installer files to the drive. The entire process will take a few minutes to complete, so you’ll need to exercise patience as the install process proceeds.<div><br /></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mHz3qIMStUQ/X3-ziUjndEI/AAAAAAAAaSY/xzNuitwHuugvAg6wYHk95NHTsewsTUp0QCPcBGAYYCw/s1920/Install-Media-macOS-Catalina-finished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="1920" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mHz3qIMStUQ/X3-ziUjndEI/AAAAAAAAaSY/xzNuitwHuugvAg6wYHk95NHTsewsTUp0QCPcBGAYYCw/w400-h200/Install-Media-macOS-Catalina-finished.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /> Having a USB installer available can make installing a fresh copy of macOS even easier. For instance, you can boot directly from the USB drive by holding the Option (⌥) key on your Mac while booting with the drive connected.
You can use this tutorial on either the developer beta, public beta, or the final version of macOS Catalina that’s scheduled to release later this fall. Keep in mind that on newer T2-enabled Macs, you may have to enable booting from external storage via macOS Recovery. We’ll address that in a future tutorial.

Antivirus software is nearly as crucial as a PC’s operating system. Even if you’re well aware of potential threats and practice extreme caution, some threats just can’t be prevented without the extra help of an AV program—or a full antivirus suite.
You could, for example, visit a website that unintentionally displays malicious ads. Or accidentally click on a phishing email (it happens!). Or get stung by a zero-day threat, where an undisclosed bug in Windows, your browser, or an installed program gives hackers entry to your system.
We’re not suggesting that PC security software is fool-proof. Antivirus software often can’t do much to stop zero-day exploits, for example. But it can detect when the undisclosed vulnerability is used to install other nasty bits, like ransomware, on your machine. Anyone who actively uses email, clicks on links, and downloads programs will benefit from an antivirus suite.
Our recommendations strike a balance between excellent protection, a worthwhile selection of features, and minimal impact on your PC’s performance. You can read about how we test antivirus suites below.<span><a name='more'></a></span>

Norton Security Premium is no more, but our pick for best AV has stayed in the family, with Norton 360 Deluxe. There aren’t a lot of fundamental changes to the suite compared to previous iterations, which also means its just as solid. The pricing now covers fewer devices, but you get a good number of extra features such as Dark Web Monitoring and VPN access, making for an overall excellent value.

AVG Internet Security does an excellent job of protecting your PC, but it’s interface could be a lot better. Nevertheless, with unlimited installs for $70 per year, it’s hard to beat this popular security solution.
<h2><strong>Best free antivirus suite</strong></h2>
<a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates">Windows Defender Security Center</a>
If Windows 10 is already working, why add anything else? That’s essentially the takeaway from our assessment of the best free antivirus. These days, Windows Defender (the antivirus arm of Windows 10’s security suite) is working just as well as third-party options. Can you find options with marginally better protection? Yes. But is it worth it? Probably not. Windows Seucrity also has ransomware protection, which many free options don’t. Plus, you avoid the hassle of a third-party suite regularly hitting you with notifications to upgrade.

Many antivirus suites create an interface that’s as simple as possible for users to understand—but sometimes the software becomes too stripped down. That’s why our recommendation for novices is Trend Micro Maximum Security.
This antivirus suite, which provides highly rated protection, strikes a nice balance between complexity and simplicity: Four category icons at the top let you dive deeper into the suite, but if all you need to do is a scan, that option is right there in the center of interface. You can’t miss it.
Overall, no matter what you need to get done in Maximum Security, the interface doesn’t leave you with any guesswork.
<h2><strong>What to look for in an antivirus suite</strong></h2>
There are three basic requirements that an antivirus suite needs:
<ul>
<li>High detection rate for malware and other threats</li>
<li>Low impact on system resources</li>
<li>An easy-to-use interface</li>
</ul>
That’s not all to consider, however. These days, many security suites come with extras such as a backup service for your most essential files, Android apps for mobile security, a more advanced firewall, family protection (read: child restriction) features, and the right to use the program on multiple PCs. Whether you need those extras depends on your personal situation.
<h2><strong>How we test</strong></h2>
First, we take a look at the interface to determine how easy or complicated it is. Does the interface make it easy to get at essential tools like PC scans and password managers, for example, or is everything buried under multiple clicks? Are there elements that look like they should be clickable but aren’t? Are alerts interactive or purely informational, and does that make sense in context?
We also examine the features on offer. Every good antivirus suite should have the basics like scanning and real-time protection, but many vendors offer elements that go beyond basic security like password managers or firewalls. We try to discern whether any of these extra features are particularly useful, or just frills that look nice but don’t serve a practical purpose.
To test the suite’s demand on system resources, we run two benchmarks. The first is PCMark 8’s Work Conventional test, which simulates a variety of workloads including editing spreadsheets, browsing the web, and running video chat.
We run the benchmark before the security suite is installed. Then we install the software, have it run a full scan on our Windows 10 test machine, and start a second run of the benchmark at the same time. Then we compare the overall scores to see if the decline between the two benchmarks is significant.
As a harsher stress test, we also use Handbrake to transcode a video before and after installing the A/V. On most home PCs, this encoding task utilizes 100 percent of the CPU. We then compare transcoding times to see if there’s any significant decline.
Our test machine is an Acer Aspire E15 with an Intel Core i3-7100U, 4GB RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. Each security suite is tested on a clean install of Windows 10 Home.
As for the antivirus suite’s detection capabilities, we’ll rely on the opinions of security researchers dedicated to this task. We’ll take into consideration reports from outlets such as A-V Comparatives, A-V Test and SE Labs.
We’ll also take pricing into account and what you get for it.
Whenever possible we’ll review security suites using a free trial to get a sense of what consumers see when they first try out a new product.

The old saw about one’s eyes being larger than one’s belly surely applies in an era when we can capture multi-megabyte images and gigabyte videos and have infinite storage online—but still have to contend with the size of flash drives in iPhones and iPads and SSDs in Macs.
Apple squared that circle with iCloud Photos, one of many companies’ attempts to pair cloud storage and personal or professional <span><a name='more'></a></span>media capture. With Google Photos, Google stores everything in your cloud account and uses its native and browser-based apps as glimpses into that storage. Apple, in contrast, wants you to have a sort of copy of all your images available offline and online with iCloud Photos.
For devices that lack enough storage to keep full-resolution versions of images and videos, Apple lets you enable optimized storage. That’s found in iOS in Settings > account name > iCloud > Photos and in Photos for macOS in Photos > Preferences > iCloud. With that setting enabled, your device always retains a thumbnail of all your media and keeps all the associated metadata. When you want to view a photo or movie, tapping it or double-clicking it downloads and caches the full-resolution version.
But Apple never dumps your original image. Optimization happens after whatever device has captured or imported an image or video has uploaded it completely to your account at Apple’s iCloud servers. Apple doesn’t reveal exactly how it handles redundancy, but it’s likely that until your media is copied to multiple geographically disparate locations across Apple’s data center network, the full-resolution version of the image or video remains on that originating device.
After that, your device’s operating system balances available storage with retaining cached copies of the high-res versions of your media. If it needs to free up storage, those much-larger renditions are dumped, with the OS secure in its ability to retrieve it again as needed.

Photoshop styles are works of art that can be applied to text, objects, vector shapes, illustrations, or photos. Unlike Microsoft styles, which are basically just a collection of attributes (such as bold, italic, underline) and minor effects (such as shadows, reflections, glowing halos), Photoshop uses layers to contain text and images, and those layers can be “decorated” with a style.

Photoshop Styles are accessed through the Styles panel, which you can add to your Photoshop desktop through the Window tab: Select Window > Styles and the panel appears. I combine the Styles panel with the Layers panel and leave both open all the time. Notice that Photoshop provides 20 “free” styles in four categories (Basic, Natural, Fur, and Fabric) to get you started.<span><a name='more'></a></span>
<h2><strong>How to import/load more Photoshop Styles</strong></h2>
If you have any older versions of Photoshop on your computer, you can import all the Styles from those other Style collections and build up your library. Click the menu icon (four stacked lines) in the top-right corner of the Styles panel, then navigate to the Adobe > Photoshop > Presets > Styles folder.
The extension for Styles is .asl. You cannot use Ctrl+ A to select them all from the list of files—you have to import them one at a time. So, select the first one and click the Load button. Follow this same procedure to import any other styles you wish. You can easily delete Styles and load more at any time.
How to use Photoshop Styles
Using Photoshop Styles is a breeze. Once you learn how the Style Effects work, you can enhance your text and images to help them pop off the page or screen. Editing styles is a bit more complicated, but still not too difficult.
To begin, ensure that the combination Layers and Styles panels are displayed on the screen.
<ol>
<li>Open an 8x10 x 300 ppi Photoshop file.</li>
<li>Use the Text tool and type Photoshop Styles across the top. Use a thick font such as Impact, Gil Sans Ultra Bold, Broadway, Franklin Gothic Heavy, or Rockwell Extra Bold, and size it to 60 points. These fonts came with Adobe, so you should have them on your system.</li>
<li>Duplicate three times, and make two of them all-caps.</li>
<li>Place your cursor on the first “Photoshop Styles” phrase in the Layers panel, then click the Styles tab.</li>
<li>Browse through the various style icons and choose one to try, or use our examples below.</li>
</ol>
How to edit Photoshop Styles
For the first one, choose the Style called “Tile.” Notice how the text has a sculptured, three-dimensional look, but the color is white and so is the background.
<ol>
<li>Let’s change the Color:
<ul>
<li>Click the Layers tab. Right-click the layer called Photoshop Styles (in lowercase) and choose Blending Options from the dropdown list.</li>
<li>In the left panel, click the word Color. In the Color Picker dialog, select a nice, dark blue, then click OK.</li>
<li>Next, slide the Opacity bar from 31% to 100% and click OK.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Now, let’s change the Drop Shadow:
<ul>
<li>Click the Layers tab again. Right-click the layer called Photoshop Styles2 (in lowercase) and choose Blending Options from the dropdown list.</li>
<li>In the left panel, click the words Drop Shadow. In the center of the panel, move the Distance slider from 7 to 20 px. Then move the Spread from 13 to 23 percent. And last, move the Size from 16 down to 10.</li>
<li>Un-check Use Global Light and change the Angle to 120 degrees, then click OK.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Now, let’s change the Bevel & Emboss:
<ul>
<li>Click the Layers tab again. Right-click the layer called PHOTOSHOP STYLES (in all caps) and choose Blending Options from the dropdown list.</li>
<li>In the left panel, click the words Bevel & Emboss. In the center panel, under Structure > Style, choose Emboss from the dropdown list, and click OK.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>And last, let’s change the Stroke (or Outline):
<ul>
<li>Click the Layers tab again. Right-click the layer called PHOTOSHOP STYLES2 (in all caps) and choose Blending Options from the drop-down list.</li>
<li>In the left panel, click the word Stroke. In the center panel under Stroke > Structure, change the Size from 8- to 6-point, and change the Position from Outside to Inside.</li>
<li>Under Stroke > Fill Type, change the Fill Type to Color and change the color to black, and click OK.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>How to save edited Photoshop Styles</strong></h2>
Edit an existing Style (like we did above), then save the Style with a different name. For example:
<ol>
<li>Right-click the first layer above called Photoshop Styles (lowercase) and choose Blending Options.</li>
<li>Click the New Style button in the Layer Style dialog and give your new style a name, such as “Blue Tile.” Click OK, OK (twice).</li>
<li>Repeat this process for the other three text layers. For Photoshop Styles2 (lowercase) name the Style: Cheetah2. For the PHOTOSHOP STYLES (all caps), name the Style: Brushstrokes2. And for the PHOTOSHOP STYLES2 (all caps) layer, name it Bright Red Bevel2.</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>How to create custom Photoshop Styles</strong></h2>
There are four ways to create a new style, but only one of them allows you to do it from scratch. The other three methods require you to choose an existing, empty style that has no features or effects, and edit it (as shown above).
<ol>
<li>Open a new 8x10 x 300 ppi file and type Create Custom Style 1, then duplicate the layer and call it “Create Custom Style 2.” Be sure the Create Custom Style 1 layer is selected, then switch over to the Styles tab.</li>
<li>At the bottom, click the tiny folder icon and in the Group Name dialog, enter a name for the folder where you want to save your custom Styles, such as “Custom1.”</li>
<li>For starters, move (drag and drop) the four new styles you just edited and saved to your folder.</li>
<li>Next, select Layers > Blending Options > New Style and enter a name, such as Base (for your basic, empty Style). Notice that all the effects in the Styles panel on the left are blank, with no checked boxes. Click OK, and now you have a base/foundation on which to build new styles.</li>
<li>Select the Base Style in the Styles panel, then any of the following three options will work now.
<ul>
<li>Choose New Style from the Styles panel menu.</li>
<li>Click the Create New Style button on the bottom, right of the Styles panel.</li>
<li>Click anywhere in an empty area on the Styles panel.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Click the Layers tab, right-click one of the Layers, and when the Layer Style dialog appears, start adding effects to your new style. If you add something you don’t like, just remove it by un-checking the box for that effect.</li>
<li>For example, my new style has the following:
<ul>
<li>Bevel & Emboss: Style = Smooth; Technique = Smooth; Depth = 125%; Highlight Mode = Dissolve; Opacity = 75%; Shadow Mode = Dissolve; Opacity = 75%.</li>
<li>Color Overlay: Pantone 287c</li>
<li>Drop Shadow: Blend Mode = Multiply; Opacity = 100%; Angle = 140 degrees; Distance = 30 px; Spread = 30%; Size = 15 px.</li>
<li>Click the New Style button again, name it Frosty, and click OK, OK (twice). Click the Styles tab and notice your new Style in the Custom1 folder.</li>
<li>Follow the instructions above to create your own new style.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>How to add patterns to Photoshop Styles</strong></h2>
Adding patterns to your Styles is easy.
<ol>
<li>Open a new Photoshop file and enter the word Pat (for Patterns). Use a thick font and size it to 200 px. Duplicate the layer twice and name the layers P1, P2, and P3.</li>
<li>Select the layer for P1. Right-click, choose Blending Options > Pattern Overlay.</li>
<li>In the Layer Style dialog, center panel, click the down arrow beside the word Pattern, and open the Pattern folders.</li>
<li>Browse through the various patterns, select one you like, and click OK.</li>
<li>Repeat steps above to add patterns to the other Layers P2 and P3.</li>
</ol>

Few things in life are as annoying as finding that your Android handset refuses to install any more app updates because it’s run out of storage. Unlike many of life’s little annoyances, though, this one’s easy to fix. You can't do anything about your system files, but you can quickly clear out precious gigs by sweeping up stale downloads, rooting out offline maps and documents, clearing caches, and wiping unneeded music and video files. And if these tips don’t do the trick, check out our picks for the best Android phones for every need and budget.
<h2><strong>Clear out all cached app data</strong></h2>
If you dig into the Apps storage setting screen and tap on an individual app, you’ll notice that each app has its own stash of “cached” data—anywhere from a few kilobytes to hundreds of megs, or even more. These caches of data are essentially just junk files, and they can be safely deleted to free up storage space. Select the app you want, then the Storage tab and, finally the Clear Cache button to take out the trash.
<h2><strong>Tame your Chrome browser</strong></h2>
One of the biggest background abusers of your phone's space is a web browser. Each time you visit a site, it stores a little bit for faster loading, and they can add up over time. To bring things back down to size, open Chrome on your Android phone, tap the menu in the top right corner, and open Settings. Then go to Site Settings and scroll down to Storage. At the bottom of the screen, you'll see a Clear site storage option. Tap it and you might free up a couple of hundred megabytes.
<h2><strong>Clean up your Downloads</strong></h2>
Just like on a PC or a Mac, your Android device has a Downloads folder. You'll find inside the Files app on most phones—though it's called My Files on Galaxy phones—and It’s a favorite hideout for miscellaneous junk files downloaded from the web or some other app. When you find it, the three-line menu icon in the top corner of the screen and sort the list of downloads by size, then take a look at what’s hogging the most storage space. Then simply tap and hold to select the ones you don't want and trash them.
<h2><strong>Dump photos that are already backed up</strong></h2>
One of the best features of Google’s Photos app is its ability to back up your entire photo library to your online Google account. Once your snapshots are safely backed up, Photos can zap any locally stored images to free up more space. Open the Photos app, tap the three-line menu button in the top left corner of the screen, then tap Free up space. The Photos app will let you know how many pictures it can delete from local storage and how much space you'll save. Tap OK to pull the trigger.
Note: If you’re using the “High quality” setting for unlimited but lower-resolution cloud storage of your backed up photos, keep in mind that the “Free up device storage” feature will delete your full-resolution originals. Make sure you’ve stored them elsewhere before you tap the OK button.
<h2><strong>Manage downloaded music, movies, and podcasts</strong></h2>
The biggest space suckers on your Android phone are media files. Those albums that you downloaded for a camping trip or a movie for a long plane ride that you simply forgot about can eat up lots of data. Thankfully they're easy to find and remove. First, head over to the Storage tab in Settings and check the Audio and Video folders to see if there are any files that can be deleted.
You'll also want to check your individual streaming apps for any downloaded files. That includes Spotify, Netflix, YouTube Music or any other app you use since files may be contained within the app itself.
<h2><strong>Erase offline areas in Google Maps</strong></h2>
Downloading a map in the latest version of the Google Maps app is a great way to navigate when your device is offline, especially now that both searching and driving directions are supported.
But those searchable offline “areas” come at a cost: storage space, and potentially lots of it. Indeed, a single offline map can consume more than a gigabyte of storage depending on the size of the area.
You can check how much space your offline maps have staked out by tapping the three-line menu button in the top left corner of the main Google Maps interface, then tapping Offline. The storage used by each offline map is displayed below its name. Tap the map and tap Delete to reclaim its storage space.
<h2><strong>Unload your least-used apps</strong></h2>
I love the fact that I can download and install Android apps to my devices remotely from a desktop web browser. The downside? My Android handsets tend to be overstuffed with too many apps, many of them used only once (or even never).
The solution, of course, is to delete some of those apps—ideally, the ones you use the least. There are also several apps that can track your app usage and tell you which apps you’re using the least, among them: App Usage, App Tracker, and QualityTime. But the best judge of the apps you don’t want is you. You can either browse your app drawer to find any apps you don’t need anymore, or check out your library in the Play Store.
To find a list of everything on your phone, open the Play Store app, tap the three-line menu button in the top right corner of the screen, tap My apps & games, then tap the Installed tab. From there, tap the Manage your apps tab. On the next page, you'll see a list of your apps sorted by how often you use them and you can easily delete the ones you don't need anymore.
<h2><strong>Use your phone's storage tools</strong></h2>
If you’re lucky enough to have a phone that’s been updated to Oreo, Google has built in some great tools for tracking and managing your storage limits. Head over to the Setting app and tap the Storage tab. Inside you’ll find a handy rundown of everything that’s taking up space on your phone, just like on Nougat. But in Oreo, you have more control over your files. Tap on any of the sections and you’ll see a list of related apps and how much space they’re using. Tap again, and you’ll be able to clear anything inside by selecting the “Free Storage button. Just keep in mind that this will clear any files being help inside the app.
You’ll also find a new “Free up space” button at the top of Oreo’s storage manager. Tap it and you’ll see a list of your downloads and infrequently used apps, as well as an option to clear any photos and videos that have already been backed up to the cloud. It’s essentially a shortcut, but it’s a handy one.
<h2><strong>Turn on smart storage</strong></h2>
Oreo includes a new toggle called Smart Storage that can work wonders without needing to do a thing. Flip it on, and your phone will automatically clear out the biggest space-stealing culprit: photos and videos.
Since we all forget to clear out our photo libraries regularly, you can choose to automatically remove backed-up photos and videos after 30, 60, or 90 days, making sure you phone isn’t stuffed with duplicate photos.
<h2><strong>Get an SD card</strong></h2>
Nearly every Android phone you can buy in 2018 has a slot for expandable storage, so you’ll be able to double, triple, and quadruple the space on your phone for just a few bucks. You’ll want to get a micro SD card from Samsung or SanDisk in at least 32GB capacity. Prices per gigabyte decrease substantially as the capacity increases, so you should buy the biggest card that you can afford. As a very general rule, around $0.40 per gigabyte is a good price.
Once you select the size you want, installing it is a snap. There’s no formatting to worry about, just pop open your SIM card slot and slide in the SD card. Then, you’ll be able to shift files and apps onto the card as needed to free up precious internal space. Most phones support SDcards, thought Google's Pixel phones and certain Galaxy phones do not.
<h2><strong>Take advantage of Google Drive</strong></h2>
Google gives 15 gigs of free cloud storage with every account, so you might as well use it. Anything inside your Downloads or Files app can be jettisoned to your Google Drive by tapping the menu button in the top right corner and choosing “Send to...” This will open the share sheet, where you can select Save to Drive to choose which folder to add it to. Then you can delete it from your phone without losing it forever.
And if 15 gigs aren’t enough, you can upgrade to Google One and increase your storage by an order of magnitude for just a few bucks a month. For just $1.99 per month, you’ll get an extra 100GB of space, and a buck more ($2.99/month) will double it to 200GB.

How can I stop Windows 10 updates? Whether it’s preventing Windows 10 from kicking off a critical update during a presentation, or deferring Microsoft’s Windows 10 feature update because of worries about data loss, it’s a question we’ve all asked. You shouldn’t block all Windows 10 updates. But you can manage them.
Windows 10 feature updates and security updates provide a valuable service: they not only patch Windows, its apps and components, but provide new features and capabilities twice a year. Windows Update can also automatically provide updated drivers for hardware connected to your PC, such as a USB-attached printer.
It’s not an academic issue. Microsoft wrestled with the fallout from the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, which apparently deleted user data in an undisclosed number of cases and was put on hold, then resumed. Would you want to buy a car if it had even a 0.001 percent chance of exploding? Probably not—which is why it’s good to know how to manage Windows 10 updates, now and in the future.
<h2><strong>Three tools to manage updates with Windows 10 Home<span><a name='more'></a></span></strong></h2>
When you’re building a PC you have two choices of Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system: Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro. <a href="https://amzn.to/2YY23dD">Windows 10 Home</a> can be the cheaper alternative, at $139. But at $200, <a href="https://amzn.to/3e0E5CM">Windows 10 Pro</a> offers some advantages, too. (You may be able to take advantage of PCWorld’s special deal: <a href="https://amzn.to/31OTS5c">a Windows 10 Pro license for $40</a>.)
We previously identified five features that would make you want to switch from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro, but in this case we’d add a sixth: the ability to more finely manage Windows updates. On the other hand, as Microsoft has evolved Windows, more control has been given to Windows 10 Home users, too.
Normally, Windows 10 updates—both periodic security updates, as well as the semi-annual feature updates—will arrive on your PC almost as soon as they’re released—unless you tell Windows not to. Don’t worry, though, as Windows Home and Pro users alike have some defenses against an unexpected Windows 10 update: Active Hours, Restart reminders, Metered updates, and the ability to pause and defer updates.
Let’s talk first about your options to manage the periodic patches and security updates Microsoft provides. To access them, first navigate to the Windows 10 Settings menu, then to Home > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options.
<strong>Active Hours</strong> can be a Windows 10 Home user’s most potent weapon against unexpected Windows 10 updates. (This setting is found in Home > Update & Security > Windows Update > Change active hours.) It’s here that you can tell Windows when you’re actively using your PC, and when it shouldn’t update Windows. The default is business hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though you can set a window for up to 18 hours later than the start time. Active Hours shouldn’t allow the update to occur during that period. Be careful, though, as the update could still kick off at, say, 4 a.m., when Active Hours is disabled and you’re not at your PC.
Even if that happens, though, you should receive a reminder via Windows’ restart reminders, the checkbox that lets you know that “We’ll show a reminder when we’re going to restart.” Even if all else fails, checking this box should pop up a notification that Windows will eventually restart and install and update, giving you some time to save and exit your work. I’ve personally had Windows alert me that an update was on its way when I was at the PC and working with Active Hours enabled. Windows didn’t update during Active Hours, but I was able to remind myself to save everything before I left for the night. (Setting a reminder via Cortana might help.)
It’s not perfect: If you’re at lunch, for example, the notification may pop up and then have disappeared by the time you’ve returned. But there should at least be a reminder in your Notifications that an update is in on its way.
Preventing Windows updates from downloading over metered connections can be a sneaky way of possibly preventing an unwanted Windows update. Windows now recognizes that some users may have metered data connections, with strict limits on how much data they can download per month. Microsoft politely allows you to avoid downloading updates via a metered connection, so you don’t pay an extra fee.
Windows is unaware whether a connection is metered, however. (And yes, you can lie.) Designate your broadband connection as a metered connection by going into Settings > Network & Internet, then Change connection properties. It’s here that you’ll see a toggle to Set as metered connection. You can then go back into the Windows Update's advanced options settings and toggle Download updates over metered connections... to Off.
Unfortunately, the default behavior when your PC is connected to ethernet is to think that your PC is on an un-metered connection. And when you’re connected to Wi-Fi, Windows will still probably download “priority” updates, so this can’t really be considered a foolproof solution. If you have multiple Wi-Fi connections available, you’ll have to set all of them as metered, too, which is a pain.
Pause updates: In Windows 10 Home, you can also pause and defer the incremental updates. Microsoft has added a quick shortcut to the Windows Update screen, so you can simply tap “pause” on updates if you’re making a short business trip.
Windows 10 Home also provides an option to defer feature updates, such as the major semiannual Windows updates like the Windows 10 May 2020 Update. It used to be that you couldn’t defer a feature update within Windows 10 Home. In 2019, Microsoft added the option to defer all updates, including feature updates, for up to 35 days. To enable this, you’ll need to enter the Settings > Windows Update and then click the Advanced options button. Scroll down to “Pause updates” and select your preferred date, up to 35 days out. That’s as far as you can go, though.
A slightly more convenient option is Windows 10 Pro.
<h2><strong>Windows 10 Pro allows you to defer updates</strong></h2>
All of the settings and options above are available within Windows 10 Pro, but there are some additional options that actually allow you to choose when updates can be installed. If you own a Windows 10 Home PC, you can upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro from within the Windows Store app for $99, or you can use this Microsoft Store link from a Windows 10 Home machine. Our Windows 10 Pro license for $40 may also apply.
Microsoft has made some changes over time, hiding some of the complexity from Pro users and merging the experience with the Home edition during the 2019 feature updates. (If you’re working on an Enterprise or Education edition of Windows, your experience may be different—your PC may be centrally managed by an IT department or other administrator who has set a particular policy for your PC.)
For example, Windows 10 Pro devices used to offer options to place PCs in either the Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted), and just a vanilla Semi-Annual Channel. Those options may be still available, but only to your IT admin in a business environment.
Essentially, Windows 10 Pro offers everything Windows 10 Home offers to manage incremental updates, plus an additional control on managing Windows 10 feature updates. Now, the key reason to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, at least where managing updates is concerned, is the ability to defer Windows feature updates for up to 365 days. But the mechanism to do so has now changed.
You can still pause all updates through Windows for 35 days, just like Windows 10 Home. But it used to be that you could pause feature updates for up to 365 days via the Windows 10 Settings’ Windows Update menu. No longer.
Yes, you can still defer feature updates for up to 365 days. But Windows Pro users will now have to do it via the Group Policy menu, a control usually reserved for system admins. This change is new for the Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004), as explained in this Windows support document. Though it applies to Windows Update for Business, Pro users will likely be affected.
Here’s how Microsoft describes the change. “Last year, we changed update installation policies for Windows 10 to only target devices running a feature update version that is nearing end of service. As a result, many devices are only updating once a year. To enable all devices to make the most of this policy change, and to prevent confusion, we have removed deferrals from the Windows Update settings Advanced Options page starting on Windows 10, version 2004.”
Instead, if you wish to continue leveraging deferrals, you’ll have to use the Group Policy controls, which are only available on Windows 10 Pro. The easiest way to access this is simply type either gspedit.msc into the Windows Search box, or edit group policy into the same box. From there, you'll need to step through the menus: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business > Select when Preview builds and Feature Updates are received or Select when Quality Updates are received.
The caveat in all of these, obviously, is that Windows 10 is an evolving platform, and Microsoft occasionally adds, subtracts, or adjusts the behavior of various features. Others, such as our earlier tip on how to upgrade Windows but prevent it from unexpectedly rebooting, may work now, but be quietly disabled in the future. Fortunately, Microsoft seems to have taken some of the more convenient elements of managing Windows 10 Pro’s patching and applied them to Windows 10 Pro.

<strong>when importing photos and videos from your phone to your Mac</strong></h1><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CentbxTnR5g/XvykjzxyKlI/AAAAAAAAZ8Y/5MkEH25Sygga0uPk8oOtr63twDLlrSEHgCK4BGAsYHg/s841/mac911-heif-macos-incompatible-100850065-orig.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="841" height="268" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CentbxTnR5g/XvykjzxyKlI/AAAAAAAAZ8Y/5MkEH25Sygga0uPk8oOtr63twDLlrSEHgCK4BGAsYHg/w500-h268/mac911-heif-macos-incompatible-100850065-orig.jpg" width="500" /></a></div><strong><br /></strong></div>
The higher compression in new media formats Apple added in iOS 11 can nearly double the amount of photos and video you can store when you take pictures and shoot movies on your iPhone or iPad.
However, using HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) and HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) becomes a problem if you haven’t installed macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later. Earlier versions of Photos and macOS lack support for those two compressed formats.
While many people update all their Apple hardware around the same time, it’s not possible for everyone, such as folks running Macs that don’t meet the latest system requirements. A Macworld reader found a problem in transferring images <span><a name='more'></a></span>from an iPhone with iOS 11 or later installed (she didn’t specify exactly) and macOS 10.12 Sierra or earlier. She received the extremely helpful message that the “operation couldn’t be completed” with the error code “com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9937.” (Is it really too much to ask to have human-readable error codes this many decades into the home-computing revolution?)
If you see this error, it’s highly likely your iPhone or iPad is set to capture images in HEIF and HEVC, but your Mac can’t import them into Photos—or iPhoto, for that matter.
Check your camera settings in Settings > Camera > Formats. If it’s set to High Efficiency, then the newer compressed formats are in use; Most Compatible, and the iPhone uses JPEG and H.264 video. (Technically, HEVC is H.265 video, where the previous flavor is the more widely supported H.264 encoding; both are packaged into a MOV file by iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, which is a generic video package format, rather than an encoding type.)
If you have High Efficiency enabled, a Mac with Sierra or earlier installed can’t import the images without conversion. However, in Settings > Photos the Transfer to Mac or PC option can be set to Automatic, and an iPhone or iPad should export them in a readable format when your Mac tries to import them, bypassing the compatibility issue. That doesn’t always seem to work.
You should be able to switch to Image Capture on your Mac, import the incompatible files, and then use a conversion tool, like iMazing HEIC Converter (free) for images, which runs on macOS 10.9 and later, and the free VLC, which lets you open and convert HEVC files.
The other possibility is that while you’re capturing images and videos in the compatible, older formats, your phone or tablet is exporting the wrong format. In that case, again go to Settings > Photos and change the transfer setting to Original and try again. For some reason, that fixes the import problem for some people, even though it seems counter-intuitive.

<a href="https://www.adobe.com/products/illustrator.html">Adobe Illustrator</a> revolutionized design by partnering closely with the design community. The <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gaCKT_Ncdk&t=261s">rapidograph</a> gave way to the pen tool because countless designers, marketers, and illustrators partnered with us to build the first vector-based design program in 1987. More than 30 years later, the culture of partnering with the community is very much infused into our DNA.
Every day, Illustrator’s team of designers, engineers, scientists, and product managers work tirelessly to gather feedback from our millions of users. Whether connecting through social <a href="https://www.facebook.com/AdobeIllustrator/">media</a>, <a href="https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator/bd-p/illustrator?page=1&sort=latest_replies&filter=all">forums</a>, or <a href="sharewithai@adobe.com">emails</a>, we’re listening and are hungry to hear more. To that end, we invite you to join us in the journey to build Illustrator together.
<strong>Here are just some ways you can get involved:<span><a name='more'></a></span></strong>
<h2>Get early access to Illustrator features with Beta programs</h2>
Every year, we release multiple updates to Adobe Illustrator for the desktop — and as you may have heard, we recently announced that Adobe Illustrator is coming to the iPad. For both the desktop and iPad versions, you’ll have the opportunity to get early access to features like <a href="https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/whats-new/2020-2.html#large-sized-canvas">100X canvas</a> before anyone else to explore and test. Here’s how:
<ul>
<li><strong>Adobe Illustrator on Desktop:</strong> For some users, you may be able to access Beta builds of Illustrator from the “Beta apps” tab in the Creative Cloud Desktop app on your computer. We are rolling out the Beta program gradually to all Creative Cloud members. <ul>
<li><strong><a href="https://illustrator.uservoice.com/">Illustrator UserVoice:</a></strong> We launched UserVoice so you can log, track, and vote on new features or bugs. Here you’ll discover what others are requesting and the latest status of those requests.</li>
<li><strong><a href="https://www.facebook.com/AdobeIllustrator/">Facebook </a></strong>and <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/illustrator">Twitter:</a> </strong>Join us on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest news on Illustrator. These channels feature webinars and information on the latest product updates. Most importantly, you can always tag these accounts or or send a direct message to connect with our team.</li>
<li><strong><a href="https://www.adobeprerelease.com/">Adobe Beta forums:</a></strong> The Adobe Beta forums, a.k.a. Prerelease forums, are open to any Creative Cloud member. In these forums, you’ll have the opportunity to join in vibrant discussions on features and road-map requests directly with the product team.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Stay up to date with what’s new in Illustrator</h2>
With each release of Illustrator, we introduce new capabilities that let you express your vision in completely new ways, as well as powerful new features that accelerate your productivity. These updates sometimes overshadow the vast amount of small improvements. For example, this year alone we have addressed over 100+ issues and delivered 22+ enhancements. Here are some ways that you can discover and make use of all the value in each Illustrator release:
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/whats-new.html">New features and enhancements: </a></strong>There are multiple ways you can stay up to date with the new value that’s added. You can find the most detailed list of changes with each release on <strong>adobe.com.</strong> We have also incorporated this list within Illustrator itself. When you launch Illustrator, be sure to look out for a “What’s New” featurette in Home.</li>
<li><strong><a href="https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/fixed-issues.html">Fixed issues and bugs:</a></strong> While we fix multiple issues and bugs with each release, not every fix is relevant to you. The best way to stay in the know about relevant fixes is by submitting or upvoting an issue on UserVoice. When you do so, you are automatically notified when the issue is resolved by the team.</li>

Many people play games on PC with a mouse and keyboard, but some genres are just better suited to controllers. If you’ve got a Nintendo Switch Pro controller, you can put it to work with your Windows computer in barely any time at all.
Our step-by-step instructions cover using a Switch Pro controller with a PC via wired or wireless connection—as well as how to make it work properly with your games.
<h2><strong>How to connect a Switch Pro controller to your PC<span><a name='more'></a></span></strong></h2>
<strong>Wireless</strong>
The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller supports standard Bluetooth, allowing you to pair it wirelessly with your PC. (If your computer doesn’t support Bluetooth, you can still use the wired method below.)
Your controller must be at least partially charged before beginning the Bluetooth pairing process.
<h2><strong>Windows 10</strong></h2>
<ol>
<li>In your computer’s System Settings, choose Bluetooth & other devices. You can also jump straight to these through a system search for “bluetooth”.</li>
<li>Make sure Bluetooth is on. The toggle will be blue, with text underneath that says “Now discoverable as <PC name>.”</li>
<li>On the Nintendo Switch Pro controller, find the sync button, which sits next to the USB-C connector at the top of the controller. Press and hold it until you see the green lights at the bottom of the controller flash in a ripple effect.</li>
<li>Back on your computer, click on Add Bluetooth or other device.</li>
<li>Your system should show a list of devices available for pairing. Choose “Pro Controller.”</li>
<li>The pairing process will begin, with the message of Connecting appearing below the device name.</li>
<li>A confirmation screen will then appear, affirming that you can now use the controller with the system. The bottom of the Switch Pro controller should also show just one square lit in green (typically, the far left one).</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>Windows 8</strong></h2>
<ol>
<li>In your computer’s PC Settings, choose PC and devices > Bluetooth. You can also jump straight to these through a system search for “bluetooth”.</li>
<li>Make sure Bluetooth is on. You’ll see text that says “Your PC is searching for and can be discovered by Bluetooth devices.”</li>
<li>On the Nintendo Switch Pro controller, find the sync button, which sits next to the USB-C connector at the top of the controller. Press and hold it until you see the green lights at the bottom of the controller flash in a ripple effect.</li>
<li>Back on your computer, your screen should show a list of devices available for pairing. Click on “Pro Controller,” then choose Pair.</li>
<li>The pairing will begin, with a gray progress bar showing below the controller’s name.</li>
<li>When the process is complete, you’ll see the word Connected. The bottom of the Switch Pro controller should also show just one square lit in green (typically, the far left one).</li>
</ol>
<strong>Note:</strong> To later use the controller with your Windows 10 or 8 PC, press any button on the controller. The green lights at the bottom should go through the ripple pattern until reconnection is complete, at which point you’ll see just one square lit up.
<h2><strong>Wired</strong></h2>
Your Nintendo Switch Pro controller should work with any USB-A to USB-C cable, with the easiest option being the one that comes included with the controller.
<ol>
<li>Connect the USB-A end of the cable to a USB port on your computer.</li>
<li>Plug USB-C part of the cable into the top of your Nintendo Switch controller.</li>
<li>Wait for Windows to recognize it. Usually, you’ll hear an audio cue as this process happens.</li>
<li>If Steam is running on your system, a ring of blue light will light around the Home button.</li>
</ol>
On occasion, the system may not recognize your controller on the first try—we’ve gotten it to work after disconnecting the cable from the controller and then reseating it again firmly.
<strong>How to configure Steam for use with a Switch Pro controller</strong>
Some game launchers will automatically recognize the Switch Pro controller once you’ve paired it or plugged it into your computer, but Steam requires you to enable support before it’ll work with your library of games.
<strong><img class="aligncenter" src="https://images.idgesg.net/images/article/2020/06/controler1-100847694-large.jpg" /></strong>
<ol>
<li>In Steam’s menu bar, go to Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings</li>
<li>Check the box next to Switch Pro Configuration Support</li>
<li>If you prefer the default Nintendo layout, also check Use Nintendo button layout. Otherwise, leave it unselected to mimic the default Xbox controller layout.</li>
</ol>

<strong>5 ways to tame the email pile</strong></h1><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ENWWuCA77U/XuOKghqZiGI/AAAAAAAAZy8/YN4A0s49DSQ9W99zinraoyZ85W8E0egvwCK4BGAsYHg/s600/email-server-1-600x389.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="389" data-original-width="600" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--ENWWuCA77U/XuOKghqZiGI/AAAAAAAAZy8/YN4A0s49DSQ9W99zinraoyZ85W8E0egvwCK4BGAsYHg/s320/email-server-1-600x389.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><strong><br /></strong></div>
Microsoft's Outlook is an irreplaceable tool for countless organizations and a veritable legion of people around the globe—but it's not a beloved one by any stretch. Nobody actually enjoys sifting through a stuffed inbox or responding to meeting requests all day long; you want to open your inbox, do what you need to do, and get the heck out as fast as possible.
That's where these Outlook organizational tips come in. Adopting these five simple practices will make diving into your inbox less painful—and far less time consuming.
<h2><strong>1. Use folders to reduce Inbox clutter</strong></h2>
It seems easy to let emails just pile up in your Inbox, until you try to find something and have to suffer through a manual search. Instead, move messages to a custom folder that relates to the company or the message. It’s just like using a file cabinet.
Custom folders are easy to create, manage, and search; and there are no limits to size or count except disk space or limitations imposed by your system administrator. But don’t go crazy! Too many folders can also slow Outlook's responses. You wouldn’t create a folder in a file cabinet for just a dozen documents. If you’re creating one folder for each client or each company, or even by subject/content (such as taxes, receipts, travel), it’s ok to consolidate the infrequent communications into a Misc folder.
Here's how to get started with custom folders.
<ol>
<li>Right-click on the Personal Folders option in Outlook's left-hand navigational pane, then choose New Folder from the dropdown list. (Alternatively open the Folder tab and click the New Folder button from the "New" group.)</li>
<li>In the Field box, type the folder name (e.g., Meetings) and press Enter. If you change your mind or notice a typo, right-click the new folder and select Rename Folder or Delete Folder. You can also Move it, Copy it, or add it to the Favorites section via the right-click menu. You can also select any one of these buttons from the Actions group.</li>
<li>Notice all the other Folder options on the Ribbon menu. You can Search, Sort, Archive, Apply Rules, Mark all Emails as Read, Clean Up, etc.—everything you need to manage your folders.</li>
</ol>
<img class="aligncenter" height="283" src="https://images.techhive.com/images/article/2014/09/microsoft_outlook_f1-create_folder-100457157-orig.jpg" width="320" />
<h2><strong>2. Create and assign categories</strong></h2>
Categories help organize the emails in your active Inbox so you can quickly determine the status of each email; for example: Pending, Due, Done, etc. You can also sort by categories. So, for example, if you only perform email maintenance once a week, you can sort by category, quickly locate all the "Done" emails, and then move them to their corresponding folders.
<ol>
<li>To create a new category, right-click on the transparent square box in the Categories column, and select "All Categories" from the dropdown list. In the Color Categories dialog box, click the New button. Enter a Name for your category in the "Add New Category dialog box.</li>
<li>Click the down-arrow beside the Color field and choose a color for the category. Next, click the down-arrow beside the Shortcut Key field and choose a shortcut key (CTRL+F2 thru CTRL+F12) for the category. These keys are not used by other functions in Outlook, so they are available for category shortcuts.</li>
<li>Click OK in this dialog, then click OK again in the Color Categories dialog box and the new category is added to your list. Note: there are 25 colors, but only 11 shortcut keys, so choose the most frequently used categories for your shortcut keys.</li>
<li>To attach a category to an email, select the email, then right-click anywhere in the Categories column, and select a category from the dropdown list. Note: emails can have more than one category. To remove a category, right-click anywhere in the Categories column on the selected email, and click Clear All Categories from the dropdown list. This will only clear all the categories attached to the selected email. It will not affect your other emails.</li>
</ol>
<img class="aligncenter" src="https://images.techhive.com/images/article/2014/09/microsoft_outlook_f2-create_categories-100457158-orig.jpg" />
<h2><strong>3. Quick Steps</strong></h2>
Quick Steps is a feature that allows you to automate several tasks into a single step (or click) such as Moving emails to a specific folder, deleting, copying, forwarding, etc. It's a wonderful time saver for users who get lots of emails from a single sender, be it junk mail or a close friend.
Once you define a Quick Step to automate a task, you can then click any email, then click the automated task from the Quick Steps menu, and Outlook performs all the steps. You can also assign the task to an open, unused shortcut key. (Again: Only nine shortcut keys are available, so choose wisely).
<ol>
<li>To create a new Quick Step: From the Home tab, click the bottom down-arrow in the "Quick Step" group, and select Create New from the list; or select New Quick Step from the first list and Custom from the second list. In the Edit Quick Step dialog box, enter a name for this task in the Name field.
<img class="aligncenter" src="https://images.techhive.com/images/article/2014/09/microsoft_outlook_f3-create_quick_step-100457159-orig.jpg" /></li>
<li>Next, click Choose An Action, click the down-arrow, and select one from the "Move to Folder" drop-down list. Another field appears under your "Move to Folder" action—"Choose Folder." Select a target folder from the list. (Such as "Vendors" in the visual example below.)</li>
<li>You can stop here and just click Finish, or click the Add Action button and Choose Action again for a second automated task, such as "Mark As Read". In the Optional pane, you can click the Shortcut Key field and select a key from the list (CTRL+SHIFT+1 thru CRTL+SHIFT+9). Then enter a tooltip in the Tooltip Text box. Click Finish and you're done.<img class="aligncenter" src="https://images.techhive.com/images/article/2014/09/microsoft_outlook_f4-define_quick_step-100457160-orig.jpg" /></li>
<li>To use this task—continuing with our Vendors example—click on an email sent by a vendor, and then click Vendors from the list. The email is marked as read and moved to your Vendors folder, all in one simple step. Alternatively, you can use the shortcut key you defined, but note that the keyboard shortcuts only work on the number keys above the letters. It does not recognize the numbers on the numeric keypad.</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>4. Email templates</strong></h2>
How often have you sent the exact same email to dozens (or more) people with nothing changed except the recipient's name and email address? Email templates make this task a snap.
<ol>
<li>Locate one of these form letter-type emails in your Sent folder. Forward it to yourself and edit out all the custom information such as the recipient's name, email address, company, etc. Then click File > Save As, enter a filename, and select Outlook Template as the file format.</li>
<li>To use/open the template: From the File tab's "New" group, choose New Items > More Items > Choose Form, and then click the down-arrow to view the list of forms. Select User Templates in file fystem, then choose your saved email template from the list and click Open. Add a custom salutation, insert an email address, and simply click Send.</li>
</ol>
<h2><strong>5. Conditional formatting rules</strong></h2>
This handy feature lets you create rules for conditional formatting. Wait, what?
Basically, it's just a few customized attributes that you can automatically add to incoming emails to make them stand out. For example, you can change the font attributes—underline, bold, italic (bold and italic are font styles of specific typefaces)—and the colors based on a rule (or condition) that you define in the "Conditional Formatting" section of Advanced View Settings.
<ol>
<li>From the File tab's "Current View" group, choose View Settings. Click the Conditional Formatting button then, in the Conditional Formatting dialog box, click the Add button and enter a descriptive name for what this rule/condition does. I entered "Editor" in the example shown above because I want the emails from my editor to really stand out and grab my attention. (Woohoo!--Ed.)</li>
<li>Click the Font button to define the format for the typeface; i.e., font name, color, and attribute such as Underline or Strikeout (for bold and italic, choose a font that offers these attributes as part of the typeface). Click OK when you're done.</li>
<li>Next, click the Condition button and define a condition; for example, you can choose a specific word (or words) in the email or subject line, an email address From or To, where your email address appears in the email (To, From, CC, etc.), and/or a general time or date (today, yesterday, last week, last month, etc.). Again click OK when you're done.</li>
<li>When the dialog box closes, click yet OK again in the Conditional Formatting dialog box, then click OK again in the Advanced View Settings dialog box. Now, whenever I receive an email from my editor at BookCoversPlus, all those emails will display on my screen in a purple, STENCIL font, as shown above.</li>
</ol>

Apple built Internet Sharing into macOS years ago, when personal hotspots and ubiquitous high-speed cellular data access was non-existent. It remains a powerful option, especially when you need to connect multiple devices and cellular isn’t an option—you’ve run out of Personal Hotspot data on your plan, for instance—or it’s a slow or expensive one.
Internet Sharing lets you take any incoming network connection and share it with one more outgoing ones. If you’re in a hotel, for instance, they may charge a fee per device for access but often an ethernet connection is offered as one way of plugging in. If so, and you’ve brought an ethernet adapter for your Mac or have ethernet built, you can connect that way.<span><a name='more'></a></span>
<ol>
<li>In the Sharing preference pane, select Internet Sharing.</li>
<li>From the “Share your connection from” pop-up menu, select your Ethernet adapter.</li>
<li>Click the Wi-Fi Options button in the bottom of the pane.</li>
<li>Configure options, such as the network name, channel, and password. I definitely recommend a password. Using the higher-numbered channels allows for better throughput but shorter range, something that’s not an issue over short distances.</li>
<li>Select the On box net to Wi-Fi.</li>
<li>Select the On box next to Internet Sharing.</li>
<li>When asked if you want to turn it on click Start.</li>
</ol>
(You can sometimes tell when Apple hasn’t updated a dialog box in a long time. This warning one is text heavy, and ends with “Contact your system administrator before turning on Internet sharing”!)
After clicking Start, the network service will be shared via Wi-Fi just as if the Mac were a Wi-Fi gateway. Some hotels and other providers use techniques to block sharing, such as attempting to track certain telltales that multiple machines are accessing the same service, so there is that.
In cases in which only Wi-Fi is available and you’re trying to share that, Apple prevents sharing Wi-Fi over Wi-Fi, because Macs lack the built-in ability to operate two separately named networks on the same hardware. (This is technically possible: it’s called VLAN for virtual LAN, and it’s used widely in corporate and large-scale public Wi-Fi deployments.)
There are a couple of ways around this, though, if it’s a common problem for you:
<ul>
<li>Add a second Wi-Fi adapter to your Mac. <a href="https://amzn.to/2XPQViy">The Edimax EW-7822ULC 802.11ac/Wi-Fi 5 adapter (</a>$20) is one we’ve recommended for years for people whose Wi-Fi has failed or who had Macs with older flavors of Wi-Fi. Edimax provides new drivers for each macOS update, though it can take months—the Catalina updated appeared only in February 2020. With a second Wi-Fi adapter, you can connect to a network with the Edimax adapter and then share via your Mac’s built-in Wi-Fi system.</li>
<li>Purchase a portable Wi-Fi router. Paired with an ethernet adapter for Macs that don’t have ethernet built in, you can use a Wi-Fi router like the <a href="https://amzn.to/3cRJb3P">TP-Link N300 Wireless Portable Nano Travel Router</a> ($25), which is powered via USB. Connect to the internet via your Mac’s built-in Wi-Fi adapter, then share via ethernet, and the TP-Link in turn shares that Internet feed over Wi-Fi.</li>

Now more than ever, we recognize that your company needs to minimize business interruption, maintain business continuity, and build resilience for the future. This is especially critical for highly regulated industries like financial services, government, as well as healthcare and life sciences. Security and compliance have never been more important, especially as employees rapidly move to working remotely.
Today, we’re announcing new advancements in Adobe Sign that include readiness for industry standards in digital documents and e-signatures in healthcare and life sciences. These enhancements can help companies be even more productive by adopting e-signatures.
This is especially important for companies that need to comply with the US FDA regulation, 21 CFR Part 11, which oversees the use of digital documents and e-signatures in healthcare and life sciences. The business of healthcare and life sciences is highly regulated, and with these enhancements users can sign critical forms without worrying if the full digital process meets 21 CFR Part 11 requirements. This allows you to focus on helping your remote teams stay productive, not the technology.
Here’s how Adobe Sign meets the needs for health and life sciences right now:<span><a name='more'></a></span>
<ul>
<li>With the newly enhanced Fill & Sign, users can select templates stored in Sign, complete their authored fields, and initiate a self-signing workflow that uses settings like identity authentication, reason for signing, and more. The entire workflow helps businesses meet compliance requirements for 21 CFR Part 11.</li>
<li>IT admins can use new, expanded life sciences settings in Sign to comply with 21 CFR Part 11 and work better with regulated workflows like patient consent.</li>
<li>We’ve also been working with Montrium, a global leader in life science compliance, to create a handbook and accelerator pack for 21 CFR Part 11 compliance documentation to get Sign customers up and running faster than ever.</li>
<li>Devices or locations can’t be a barrier to getting work done, whether that’s signing a document or getting feedback on a time-sensitive document. According to <a href="http://www.adobe.com/go/tei-infographic-adobe-sign">The Total Economic Impact of Adobe Sign</a>, a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Adobe in August 2019, Sign users saw a 96 percent reduction in the time it takes to get documents signed and finalized—from seven days to two hours.</li>
</ul>
“At Montrium, we believe that life sciences organizations deserve services and solutions that are as modern, well-designed, easy-to-use and accessible as the ones we use in our personal lives. Now, with the new enhancements to Adobe Sign, we’re pleased to help life sciences organizations jump-start use of e-signatures for GxP and other processes,” said Michael Zwetkow, Montrium Vice President – Professional Services & Alliances
In addition to these enhancements for life sciences, we’re continuing to invest in helping customers of all sizes and industries be more productive and secure with the broad set of tools in Sign:
<ul>
<li>Users now get even quicker access to their most recently used document templates from the home screen.</li>
<li>Hover-over actions in the Sign home page give users instant access to the most commonly used actions like adding a signature reminder or downloading a completed agreement.</li>
<li>The signing experience on <a href="https://magento.com/products/magento-commerce">mobile</a> devices is easier than ever with optimized data entry for numbers and dates.</li>
</ul>
Learn more about signing up for a trial of Sign <a href="https://acrobat.adobe.com/us/en/sign/free-trial-global.html">here</a>. If you’re already a Sign customer, these enhancements are automatically available to you to start using today.
We recognize that technology can play a critical role by helping you enable remote work without sacrificing productivity or collaboration. We’re here to help you and your remote teams get up and running quickly in these unprecedented times. We hope that Sign can help you manage your documents and e-signatures a little easier today.

<strong>Take safety seriously</strong>
<strong>Stop using bulgy batteries and smoking monitors</strong></h1>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p0_o5HXT9LY/Xq652XlW0NI/AAAAAAAAZgs/KkXpYGUrFvMiekk2I6Zf9WFRsN4BM1KmQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/1135861.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="270" data-original-width="480" height="180" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p0_o5HXT9LY/Xq652XlW0NI/AAAAAAAAZgs/KkXpYGUrFvMiekk2I6Zf9WFRsN4BM1KmQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1135861.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<strong><br /></strong></div>
However, with a huge number of people suddenly working from home, we've had a spate of emails that start, "I'm not sure if this is safe, but" and proceed to describe monitors producing a burning smell or smoking lightly, batteries bulging out of laptops and mobile devices, and similar accounts of electrical or electro-chemical concerns.
Current conditions have often led us to use old equipment or try to revive broken hardware, but you should be sure you'd don't accidentally harm yourself in the process.<br />
<a name='more'></a>
<br />
<h2>
<strong>Safely discard bulging or hot batteries</strong></h2>
If you have any lithium-ion or similar battery that is bulging out of its confines, particularly if it's discoloring plastic or making metal too hot to safely touch, immediately stop charging it and stop using it!
I would normally advise you to take the battery to a place that accepts them for safe disposal, such as an Apple Store for Apple devices or a local hazardous-materials depot in your town or county. However, given that as I write this, many stores and facilities are closed, you should secure the battery to prevent it from catching on fire.
If it's removable, carefully extract it and put it in a bucket of sand or kitty litter in a cool place. In the worst case, put the entire unit on a cool concrete slab in a space that's not entirely airtight, like a garage accessible from the outside. You can read more advice in this older column.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>Stop using devices that produce a smell or smoke</strong></h2>
Electronics have a lot of horrible materials in them that are make inert and safe when manufactured. However, wear and tear as well as the mere passage of time can turn solids, such as in transformers that convert AC into DC power, into something like sludge or even a liquid.
Monitors appear particularly subject to this problem, often because they had large transformers that apparently used materials that sometimes don't remain stable. If you're using a monitor or any piece of equipment, and you smell something acrid or unusual or, worse, the device produces smoke, turn it off immediately and remove it from power.
While the smell or smoke may not be fatal or horribly toxic, it is certainly not good for you in any sense, and it is often a precursor to an electrical failure, which could cause a shock or a home electrical problem, or a fire.
Unlike a lithium-ion battery, removing power almost always solves the problem entirely, as it's only the presence of electricity that produces heat or a reaction.
Some devices can be repaired by swapping out power supplies and other components. iFixIt has guides and parts for lots of hardware. But even if parts are available, the cost and complexity of repairing an older display is often not worth it compared to purchasing a new, often higher-resolution or better made modern alternative.<br />

Some doctors are recommending these small, inexpensive devices to help monitor coronavirus symptoms. Should you get one?
As coronavirus testing efforts continue to ramp up and face masks become part of everyday life, a tiny diagnostic tool that clips to your finger is quickly becoming a must-have gadget in the fight against COVID-19. It's called a pulse oximeter, and it checks your blood oxygen level.
The device was already beginning to surge in popularity as the public learned that people with the coronavirus often arrive at the hospital with abnormally low oxygen levels. After an op-ed piece in The New York Times on April 20 recommended that pulse oximeters be used to identify the sickest among COVID-19 patients and detect the frightening condition known as "silent hypoxia," sales of the devices skyrocketed. Right now, most are sold out in stores and online.
But questions and controversy have arisen around the at-home use of pulse oximeters, which painlessly measure heart rate and oxygen levels. It's not entirely clear if pulse oximeters can help detect a coronavirus infection or whether their widespread use can help curb the spread of COVID-19.
Whether you already have a pulse oximeter or you're thinking about buying one, here's what you need to know about what they do, how they work, what the results mean and how accurate they might be.<br />
<a name='more'></a>
<br />
<h3>
<strong>Pulse oximeters: Vital signs, at your fingertips</strong></h3>
A pulse oximeter is a small medical device that measures heart rate and blood oxygen saturation. It's usually clipped to your finger, but it can also attach to your ear, nose, toe or forehead. Some are battery powered and provide real-time results on a small LED display on the device itself. Others connect with a wire to a separate vital sign monitor that records even more precise information about your heart rhythm, body temperature and blood pressure using other sensors connected to your body.
<br />
<h3>
<strong>How pulse oximeters measure heart rate and oxygen</strong></h3>
A pulse oximeter measures your blood oxygen saturation and heart rate by shining a light through your skin and detecting both the color and movement of your blood cells. Oxygenated blood cells are bright red, deoxygenated cells are dark red.
The pulse oximeter compares the number of bright red cells to dark red cells to calculate your oxygen saturation as a percentage. So, for example, a reading of 99% means only 1% of the blood cells in your bloodstream have been depleted of oxygen.
Every time your heart beats, it pushes your blood through your body in a quick pulse (which is why "pulse" is another word for "heart rate"). A pulse oximeter, using light, detects this movement and calculates your heart rate in beats per minute, or BPM.
<br />
<h3>
<strong>What's a healthy oxygen level and heart rate?</strong></h3>
According to the Mayo Clinic, a normal pulse oximeter oxygen level reading is between 95% and 100%, and anything less than 90% is considered dangerously low, or hypoxic. Some doctors have reported COVID-19 patients entering the hospital with oxygen levels at 50% or below.
A normal resting heart rate is between 60 and 100 BPM. Typically, lower is better, as a slower heart rate is usually an indication of a strong cardiovascular system.
<br />
<h3>
<strong>Can a pulse oximeter detect COVID-19?</strong></h3>
Not exactly. Although many doctors report that patients with COVID-19 are presenting with dangerously low blood oxygen levels, COVID-19 isn't the only disease that can cause such a problem. Chronic lung diseases, like COPD, asthma and other non-COVID-19 lung infections can also result in a low oxygen count.
A low oxygen reading by itself is not enough to diagnose COVID-19, but your doctor would want to know about it, especially if you notice the level decreasing over time. And if you've been diagnosed with COVID-19, your doctor may want you to monitor your oxygen level to determine whether your condition is worsening or improving.
<br />
<h3>
<strong>How accurate are over-the-counter pulse oximeters?</strong></h3>
Like with any electronic equipment, not all pulse oximeters are created equal. A 2016 study of low-cost pulse oximeters concluded several inexpensive consumer-grade devices provided highly inaccurate readings.
Some pulse oximeters have been cleared by the FDA, which means they should meet FDA standards for accuracy. Note that there is a distinction between "FDA-approved" and "FDA-cleared," with "cleared" being the less rigorous of the two. That said, Class II medical devices like pulse oximeters are usually "cleared" rather than "approved."
You can look for pulse oximeters on the FDA-cleared list by visiting the FDA's Premarket Notification website and searching for "pulse oximeter" in the Device Name field, with or without a manufacturer's name.
<br />
<h3>
<strong>How much should I spend on a pulse oximeter?</strong></h3>
In the 2016 study that found most low-cost pulse oximeters to be relatively inaccurate, "low-cost" was defined as costing less than $50. Pulse oximeters that have been cleared by the FDA tend to range in price from around $50 to $60 to well into the hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
<br />
<h3>
<strong>Where can I buy a pulse oximeter?</strong></h3>
You can still find pulse oximeters on sale online at Walmart, Amazon and eBay, but most of the name-brand devices you'll find on various best lists, like those at DigitalTrends, The Wirecutter and Consumer Reports, are either sold out completely or on backorder, with shipping estimates weeks or sometimes months away.
This week, the CDC added five more official COVID-19 symptoms for a total of seven, which are detailed here. However, symptoms, vital signs and statistics aren't the only way to track the pandemic: Memes and social media chatter are relevant data points, too. Depression and anxiety may not be symptoms of the disease itself, but as the pandemic continues, you're not the only one feeling down about it.<br />

Zoom is adding a way for hosts to report meeting participants, according to the app’s release notes published on April 19th <a href="https://www.pcmag.com/news/got-a-zoom-bombing-problem-zoom-will-soon-let-you-report-attacks-in-real">(via PC Mag)</a>. In theory, that could help the company track down trolls that take over Zoom calls and share inappropriate material, a practice more colloquially known as <br />
<a name='more'></a>“Zoombombing.” Zoom says the reporting feature will be available in an update that’s scheduled to release on Sunday, April 26th.
“This feature will generate a report which will be sent to the Zoom Trust and Safety team to evaluate any misuse of the platform and block a user if necessary,” Zoom said in the update notes. Account owners and admins will be able to turn on the setting. Zoom declined to comment when The Verge asked for more details about the policy.
As Zoom usage has skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, the platform has become a potential target for pranks and harassment through methods like Zoombombing. To help prevent Zoombombing, the company turned on passwords and waiting rooms for meetings by default for free users and for users with a single license on Zoom’s cheapest paid tier on April 5th.
Zoom also removed Meeting IDs from meeting title bars on April 8th — before then, sharing screenshots of meetings on social media could expose that Meeting ID and potentially let people to join your meeting uninvited. Federal prosecutors have also warned that there could be significant legal implications for Zoombombing.<br />

Even before the coronavirus outbreak, remote work was on the rise. Many remote employees say that working from home keeps them happier and more productive than they would have been in an office. The COVID-19 pandemic has rushed in a new era of remote work for millions that might have been inevitable. Today, many tech, information, and creative workers are working from home for the first time and getting a crash course on its many benefits and drawbacks.
Whether you love working from home or not, having great tools can make <br />
<a name='more'></a>all the difference for your general level of productivity and creativity. To help with that, our team at <a href="https://stock.adobe.com/">Adobe Stock</a> has curated a new collection of fresh planners, moodboards, collages, and more to make work feel a bit brighter.
<a href="https://stock.adobe.com/collections/97RDi19uPHkbdiC36L6rXksqCIgjkr7k?filters%5Bcontent_type%3Atemplate%5D=1&asset_id=277417753"><strong><em>Check out the Work from Home Collection here.</em></strong></a>
The designers who contributed to this collection focused on bringing color and playfulness into their creations.
“I enjoy our planner templates, especially the colorful ones. They make working from home easier and more fun,” says Monika Szynkiewicz, designer from Wavebreak Media. “A lot of people struggle with distractions while working from home and need something to help them focus. Having templates that would help them achieve that is very convenient, and even better when they’re cool to use!”
When asked to pick a favorite, Wavebreak Media Designer Grace Murray says, “I love this set of planners. The use of bright colors and illustrative elements will brighten up any desk, and this set covers a big range of things to plan.”

The team is excited to present this collection, especially right now, when so many are working remotely for the first time.
“This collection can operate as an aid to your working day and may even brighten it a little,” Grace says. “It is such a good idea to bring these together to help us all work from home. For Wavebreak Media, it makes us happy to see our work on Adobe Stock!”
“It has been fantastic to see the creative community come together during this time,” says John Hayes, lead 3D artist at Wavebreak Media. “This collection gives creators more opportunities to add content to their workflow, to help them to create new, compelling projects for themselves.”
It’s already clear that the changes brought about by the pandemic will have lasting reverberations through the creative community, as well as the wider world, when it comes to how we all work together. While the conditions today are far from ideal, the situation does give us a glimpse of how work will continue to evolve in the years ahead.
“Many are having to adapt quickly to be able to stay productive from home,” says designer Rosa Maglione, whose work is also featured in the collection. “Whether it’s delivering work for your employer or client, keeping a routine for yourself amidst the insanity, or promoting your work to stay afloat, we all need resources to work effectively from home right now. This collection has a little something for everyone.”
“Adaptations to the way we work have come about that were once not possible,” says John. “What is clear is that when challenges arise, creativity thrives.”<br />

Syncing Messages via iCloud lets you have access to all your conversations and associated pictures and files on all the devices you’ve connected with your iCloud account. However, Messages storage can really add up if you send and receive lots of images or videos.
I documented in October 2019 how you can delete individual photos and other attachments via the Messages app in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. It’s tedious, but it works.
But there are other methods you can use. And you can export attachments before deletion if you want to retain them.<br />
<a name='more'></a>
<br />
<h2>
<strong>Delete attachments along with conversations</strong></h2>
In iOS or iPadOS, you can find conversations that contain the proportionately largest collection of attachments. Go to Settings > account name > iCloud > Manage Storage > Messages > Top Conversations. There you see a list by descending order of storage consumed of all your Messages conversations. You can swipe left and tap Delete to remove that conversation or swipe all the way from the right to left—but be wary! There’s no confirmation prompt, and all the texts and attachments are removed on all connected devices!
In macOS, select the conversation in Messages, and then select File > Delete Conversation.
Complete removal is probably not desirable, unless you want no record of those communications. (Hey, some breakups are bad.)
<br />
<h2>
<strong>Delete the biggest attachments and optionally export them in iOS/iPadOS</strong></h2>
You can pick off the lowest-hanging fruit via iOS and iPadOS in reducing storage by going to Settings > General > iPhone/iPad Storage > Review Large Attachments. The Review Large Attachments link shows beneath the tap target how much storage files occupy.
In the Attachments view, tap the attachment and tap the Share button to save or export the item first. There’s no way to select and export multiple items.
You can swipe left on any attachment and then tap delete or swipe all the way from the right to left to delete it. There’s no prompt, so be careful. You can also tap Edit, select items, and tap the trash can icon to delete multiple files at once.
You would think you would be able to review attachments in the same iPhone/iPad Storage view by tapping Messages and then tapping links below the Documents heading, which shows a total of storage consumed next to each item. However, at least in the version of iOS at this writing, almost nothing appeared in the lists by category when I tapped them. There may be an issue in what’s stored locally on the device and what’s in iCloud, but I’d expect the two to be linked.
Export attachments via Messages on all platforms
There’s an easy way to export attachments in bulk, too.
In iOS and iPadOS:
<br />
<ol>
<li>Open the Messages app.</li>
<li>Tap on a conversation.</li>
<li>Tap the avatar or name at the top of the conversation.</li>
<li>Tap the “i” info button.</li>
<li>Swipe down to Photos and tap See All Photos.</li>
<li>Tap Select at the top of the view.</li>
<li>Now you can select multiple photos and tap Save to store them in the device’s camera roll.</li>
</ol>
You can repeat that action for Screenshots (by tapping the Screenshots button at the top of the view), but there’s no way to access files.
In macOS:
<br />
<ol>
<li>Open the Messages app.</li>
<li>Select the conversation.</li>
<li>Click the Details link in the upper-right corner.</li>
<li>Under Photos or Files, you can select one or multiple items.</li>
<li>With Photos, you can Control-click and choose Add to Photos Library. With Photos and Files, you can drag the selection to the Finder.</li>
</ol>

Meet Microsoft’s Windows 10 May 2020 Update. On Thursday, Microsoft said the latest iteration of Windows 10—known informally as Windows 10 20H1 or version 2004—has reached what Microsoft is calling its final build of the cycle, Build 19041.207.
The May 2020 Update build will begin rolling out soon to members of the “Release Preview” ring of the Windows 10 Insider program, which is reserved for those who wish to receive what are essentially final release builds early, with minimal risk to their devices. Microsoft isn’t saying when the Windows 10 May 2020 Update will roll out to the general public—beyond the general May 2020 timeframe, of course.
Microsoft is also apparently reserving its right to keep publishing new bug fixes until then. “We will continue to improve the overall experience of the May 2020 Update on customers’ PCs as part of our normal servicing cadence,” wrote Brandon LeBlanc, senior program manager of the Windows Insider program, in a blog post.
Microsoft has been extremely conservative in its timing of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update; Microsoft essentially stopped adding new features to the May 2020 Update around late November of 2019. Since then, developers have been slowly fixing bugs, most likely hyperconscious of avoiding repeats of showstoppers like the 2018 Windows 10 update glitch that erased user data.
As with other companies, Microsoft’s efforts have been slowed by the coronavirus, too. In a Mixer broadcast, senior product manager Jason Howard noted that a scheduled “bug bash” this week had been cancelled.<br />

<br />
<h2>
<strong>How to get the Windows 10 May 2020 Update</strong></h2>
Though the look and feel of Windows has changed, <a href="https://www.pcworld.com/article/3038430/how-to-join-the-windows-10-insider-preview-program.html">joining the Windows Update program</a> to get the Windows May 2020 Update early remains as straightforward as when the program first began. (Remember, this is optional: Around May, your PC will receive the update automatically even if you're not in the Insider program.) It’s also worth noting that this is still technically beta software; there’s a small, but real chance that something could go wrong, so make sure critical documents are backed up.
Otherwise, you can go to the Windows Settings menu, then to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program and click the Get started button to kick off the process. You’ll have to have a Microsoft account associated with your machine, and allow Microsoft to access “full” diagnostic data on your PC.
You’ll then need to pick the particular “ring” of the Insider Preview you wish to join. In this case, selecting “Release Preview” will attach your PC to this early preview of the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, and nothing more. (It may be referred to as “Just fixes, apps, and drivers.”) You’ll need to reboot your PC, then proceed to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Check for updates. That will begin the lengthy download process, during which you can do other things. After the download has completed and installed, you’ll need to reboot again.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>What to expect in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update</strong></h2>
Because Microsoft has taken such a long time preparing for the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, we’ve had a long time to take a look at it.
In fact, we’ve not only written an explainer on what to expect in the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, we’ve also had the chance to issue a formal review of Microsoft’s Windows 10 May 2020 Update. (Both were referred to originally as Windows 10 20H1, as we didn’t know the official code name at the time.) Remember, Microsoft has kept the May 2020 Update largely unchanged for months.
As Windows updates go, May 2020 will stick to the middle of the road. This isn’t a 2019-era “slap a label on a few bug fixes and call it a day” release, but neither is it a “Creators Update,” which promised dramatic changes.
Oddly, some of the biggest changes are in aspects of the operating system you’ll literally need to hunt down and install. The Windows Subsystem for Linux, for instance, is an optional feature. Your Phone has been added into the core Windows experience over the last year or so.
Microsoft has also made a nice return to form in scattering useful little improvements all over the OS. In March, Microsoft disclosed DirectX 12 Ultimate, with improved raytracing support. You’ll need dedicated hardware and game support for that, but the technology should be built into the Windows 10 May 2020 Update, too.
Microsoft’s promised us more details on the Windows 10 May 2020 Update as the general rollout nears, so expect more information soon.<br />

As most individuals, small businesses, and enterprises move to virtual collaboration to keep business going during these unprecedented times, we want to show you how you can use Adobe Document Cloud with Microsoft apps to help manage your critical documents and e-signatures a little bit easier right now. Most businesses of all sizes today rely too much on manual or paper-based processes that, in times like today, can severely disrupt how you operate your business. With Adobe and Microsoft, those processes can be made 100 percent digital and moved to the cloud.
Now more than ever, we realize that you need to stay productive with easy-to-use and secure digital tools that also keep them connected with your teams. Fortunately, Document Cloud solutions including Adobe Acrobat DC and Adobe Sign, as well as Adobe PDF services and apps like Adobe Scan are integrated with a number of Microsoft products. The integrations create a streamlined combination of products that can save you time. Here’s what you can do right now:<br />
<a name='more'></a>
<br />
<ul>
<li><strong>Create and sign documents directly in Microsoft Teams:</strong> Remote workforces can use the Adobe Sign app in Teams to send critical documents for signature and approval, as well as access a secure audit trail for every transaction. Reminders can even be set for collaborators. For instance, healthcare professionals can use Teams to make a video call with patients, and patients can sign consent forms with Sign in Teams. Also, sales teams can sign and manage contracts remotely with Teams call capabilities and Sign without having to meet face-to-face with customers.
Create signable PDFs quickly and easily with Adobe Sign and Microsoft 365: Access Adobe PDF services and Sign directly from the ribbon in online versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Convert documents into high-quality PDF files that preserve fonts, formatting, and layouts and can be password protected. Then send documents for signature and approval without leaving your Microsoft 365 apps, including Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.</li>
<li><strong>Create digital forms with Adobe Sign and Microsoft SharePoint:</strong> Create and embed digital forms that can be filled, signed, and reused for as long as you want. The data and documents can automatically be saved and mapped to SharePoint folders and lists. For example, this integration is important for collecting information from new hire applications that are filled out online. Schools can also have parents sign digital forms to purchase e-learning software with the Sign web forms integration in SharePoint.</li>
<li><strong>Keep business going with Adobe Sign for Microsoft Dynamics 365:</strong> Send, sign, track, and file contracts and agreements with legally-binding, globally compliant e-signatures—all without leaving Microsoft Dynamics 365.
Build end-to-end digital workflows with Adobe Sign and Microsoft Power Automate: Add Sign to any Microsoft Power Automate process to build end-to-end digital workflows. For example, healthcare professionals can use Power Automate and Sign to automatically push onboarding forms from a custom web or mobile app into the patient’s digital medical records.</li>
<li><strong>Access Adobe PDF services within SharePoint and OneDrive: </strong>Create and view high-quality Adobe PDFs that preserve fonts, formatting and layouts and can be password protected. Combine multiple file types into a single PDF that can be used for archiving or distribution, and convert PDFs into editable Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or RTF files from mobile devices or online.</li>
</ul>
To sign up for a free trial of Acrobat DC and a special extended trial of Sign, visit our blog about those offers here. Download free Document Cloud add-ins for your Microsoft apps including Word/PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Dynamics 365, and Teams.

<br /></div>
Apple’s annual October hardware event wrapped late last month with the announcements of a new MacBook Air and a revamped Mac mini. Both computers, like the newest MacBook Pro and last year’s iMac Pro, come equipped with Apple’s security-focused T2 chip. The T2 chip, which acts as a co-processor, is the secret to many of Apple’s newest and most advanced features. However, its introduction into more computers and the likelihood that it becomes commonplace in every Mac going forward has renewed concerns that Apple is trying to further lock down its devices from third-party repair services.
The T2 is “a guillotine that [Apple is] holding over” product <br />
<a name='more'></a>owners, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens told The Verge over email. That’s because it’s the key to locking down Mac products by only allowing select replacement parts into the machine when they’ve come from an authorized source — a process that the T2 chip now checks for during post-repair reboot. “It’s very possible the goal is to exert more control over who can perform repairs by limiting access to parts,” Wiens said. “This could be an attempt to grab more market share from the independent repair providers. Or it could be a threat to keep their authorized network in line. We just don’t know.”
Apple confirmed to The Verge that this is the case for repairs involving certain components on newer Macs, like the logic board and Touch ID sensor, which is the first time the company has publicly acknowledged the new repair requirements for T2-equipped Macs. But Apple could not provide a list of repairs that required this or what devices were affected. It also couldn’t say whether it began this protocol with the iMac Pro’s introduction last year or if it’s a new policy instituted recently.
The T2 is a custom-designed component that performs, among other tasks, processing for Touch ID fingerprint data. It also stores the cryptographic keys necessary to securely boot the machines it runs on. Apple says the chip is critical to new features, too, such as enabling the MacBook Pro to respond to “Hey Siri” requests without requiring you to press a button. It also prevents its laptop microphones from being remotely operated by hackers when the lid of the device is closed. Effectively, the T2 chip is capable of communicating with other components in order to perform some of the most important and sophisticated tasks modern Macs are capable of.
But recent revelations about the T2 have Apple critics concerned that it could be used to further shut out DIY enthusiasts and third-party repair services. First revealed last month by MacRumors and Motherboard, both of which got their hands on an internal Apple document, the T2 chip could render a computer inoperable if, say, the logic board is replaced, unless the chip recognizes a special piece of diagnostic software has been run. That means if you wanted to repair certain key parts of your MacBook, iMac, or Mac mini, you would need to go to an official Apple Store or a repair shop that’s part of the company’s Authorized Service Provider (ASP) network. If you want to repair or rebuild portions of those devices on your own, you simply can’t — at least, according to this document.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jFejAU6_JPc/XpMedN1GjbI/AAAAAAAAZcI/WLm9ZuedBcsODEQINXbYRcWedGDb2K8ywCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/32094-54683-000-lead-T2-chip-%2528iFixit%2529-l.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="368" data-original-width="660" height="178" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jFejAU6_JPc/XpMedN1GjbI/AAAAAAAAZcI/WLm9ZuedBcsODEQINXbYRcWedGDb2K8ywCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/32094-54683-000-lead-T2-chip-%2528iFixit%2529-l.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
The parts affected, according to the document, are the display assembly, logic board, top case, and Touch ID board for the MacBook Pro, and the logic board and flash storage on the iMac Pro. It is also likely that logic board repairs on the new MacBook Air and Mac mini are affected, as well as the Mac mini’s flash storage. Yet, the document, which is believed to have been distributed earlier this year, does not mention those products because they were unannounced at the time.
Regardless, to replace those parts, a technician would need to run what’s known as the AST 2 System Configuration suite, which Apple only distributes to Apple Stores and certified ASPs. So DIY shops and those out of the Apple network would be out of luck. As the document puts it:
<br />
<blockquote>
<em><strong>For Macs with the Apple T2 chip, the repair process is not complete for certain parts replacements until the AST 2 System Configuration suite has been run. Failure to perform this step will result in an inoperative system and an incomplete repair.</strong></em></blockquote>
But complicating matters, it was unclear if this “kill switch” was active as of last month. The teardown experts at iFixit, who are also staunch right-to-repair advocates, bought a new 2018 MacBook Pro and discovered that they could still replace its display with one from a unit they bought over the summer. “To our surprise, the displays and MacBooks functioned normally in every combination we tried. We also updated to Mojave and swapped logic boards with the same results,” iFixit’s Adam O’Comb wrote in a blog post.
Apple confirmed to The Verge that the display assembly should not require the diagnostic tool, but it is unclear why iFixit was able to swap logic boards and still boot the machines. One possible explanation is that iFixit used components already validated by Apple, and the diagnostic tool may only be required for brand-new, unused components.
iFixit speculates that the software could be a mechanism for checking that third-party repair shops are using the correct components and not overcharging customers and using cheaper parts to make money on the side. It could also be for calibration purposes. But O’Comb says that Apple may want to have more end-to-end control over how Mac computers are repaired, what parts are used, and how much those repairs cost the customer.
Making all of this function is the T2 chip, a now-integral part of the Mac hardware and software ecosystem that Apple says enables all sorts of critical security functions. In that sense, running the software diagnostic suite on T2-equipped devices could simply be a way to ensure that all of the security-focused features enabled by the chip remain intact after repairs of, say, the logic board on the iMac Pro or the Touch ID board on the MacBook Pro. It’s certainly reasonable, but Apple’s lack of clarity on when, why, and to what extent it instituted the diagnostic tool requirement has led to confusion and concern.
Apple says that a vast majority of repairs can be conducted without needing the tool, and it’s certainly true that most Mac owners will never be in the position of needing to replace a logic board or Touch ID sensor on their own. Both components are parts Apple says only it distributes, while solid state drives on most modern Macs, like the new Mac mini, are not user replaceable because they are soldered either to other components or the housing unit.
So while Apple may not have initiated this protocol for all T2-equipped devices or simply doesn’t require it on used parts, as iFixit’s demonstrations made clear, the company’s confirmation that it nonetheless requires some form of proprietary software may add more fuel to the long-simmering repairability debate. Critics, with iFixit among the most vocal, have knocked Apple in the past for how its environmental and reusability pledges square with the reality of its repair practices and the longevity of its devices.
Onstage at its event, Apple touted the new MacBook Air and Mac mini as the first products to be made of recycled aluminum. It was also reported that Apple is planning an expansion of its repair services to include a “vintage” option for older devices, like the iPhone 4S and 2012 MacBook Pro, that have since been removed from repair eligibility. Additionally, Apple appears to have made the new MacBook Air’s battery more easily replaceable and allowed 2018 Mac mini owners to replace the RAM on the new machine, a change from the 2014 model.
Yet Apple devices remain among the hardest in the industry to repair due to custom screws, unibody enclosures, and manufacturing decisions that make removing certain components needlessly difficult. The end result is that a vast majority of iPhone and Mac owners are reliant on Apple or members of its trusted repair network to get devices fixed or to reuse old ones. That’s an issue if you don’t live near an Apple Store or one of its authorized providers, but it’s also an issue because Apple-provided repairs tend to be more expensive than third-party ones, and a lack of any meaningful competition may lead to higher prices down the road.
The company is also opposed to right-to-repair legislation that would mandate it make instructions and tools available to DIY hobbyists and out-of-network third-party repair shops. Inevitably, because of this attitude, Apple owners may be more likely to simply buy a new device instead of repairing a current one or refurbishing an old one, something environmental advocates fear could complicating efforts to reduce e-waste.
Apple can only reuse so much of a device, with the rest being recycled, but it still must source a finite amount of minerals and other key elements that end up going into the production of phones and computers. And the technology industry, of which Apple is just the most visible player and certainly not the biggest or only offender, has been accelerating its production of new devices over the last decade.
Of course, the debate around iPhone repairability is much more complex than that of Macs. Customers tend to replace phones more often than computers, and there are a number of incentives — like Apple’s iPhone Upgrade Program and the fact that smartphone batteries degrade — that encourage the more frequent buying of new phones. A MacBook Pro owner is much more likely to get their laptop repaired, even if it requires shipping it off to Apple for two weeks, then they are to toss out the computer and buy a new one.
Still, with the existence of the T2 diagnostic requirement, Macs could soon become even harder to repair than they already are, and iFixit’s Wiens says that, whatever the motivator, requiring you only go through Apple’s network could have negative consequences for all parties involved. “It would be a very dangerous precedent, and might bring things into legal jeopardy,” he said.
Wiens made note of how Error 53, which bricked iPhones using third-party components, forced Apple to develop a fix for the issue. The Australian government fined the company $6.6 million when Apple Store employees informed users that their bricked phones were pretty much unrecoverable. Similarly, last year’s battery slowdown fiasco, in which it was revealed Apple throttled older iPhones to prevent accidental shutdowns, led to discount battery replacements for the last 12 months and a congressional inquiry.
“If they do this, it will dramatically increase the likelihood that right to repair legislation passes and forces them to reverse course,” Wiens said, referring to Apple requiring the diagnostic tool on all future logic board and Touch ID replacements. “Locking down repairs is bad for consumers, bad for the environment, and bad for Apple.”<br />

WWDC may be in limbo due to the coronavirus outbreak, but that’s not stopping the release of iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. Apple is hard at work on the next update for the iPhone and iPad, and details are starting to leak ahead of the big reveal. Here is everything we know so far.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS14 and iPadOS 14: Widgets and wallpaper settings<a name='more'></a></strong></h2>
Twitter user @DongleBookPro has what are claimed to be images of the iOS 14 wallpaper management screens. They show a new “collections” menu that users can populate with their own photos and some “home screen appearance” options that let you change the way your home screen image looks—making it darker, giving it a gradient, etc.
More interesting is the details of what we might be able to do with our home screens. A project code-named “Avocado” is rumored to allow the placement of real widgets on our iPhone and iPad home screens. Not the simple column of static widgets we have today, but moveable dynamic widgets. Reportedly, the feature is still being worked on and might be scrapped, so don’t get your hopes up too much.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS 14: CarPlay and Maps</strong></h2>
According to code obtained by 9to5Mac, Apple will allow users to set a wallpaper for use in CarPlay for the first time. The site claims that Apple is testing the feature with its own built-in wallpapers for now, which have light and dark modes that toggle automatically with ambient light, just as the rest of the CarPlay interface does.
In the Maps app, Apple will give more information about Genius Bar services offered at Apple Stores. For example, you can see if the store offers same-day screen or battery repairs, or device trade-in for credit.
In addition, 9to5 says Maps will tell you if a location has seating for couples, discounts for children, or private rooms. Movie theaters with IMAX sessions will also be featured.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS and iPadOS 14: Apps</strong></h2>
Every new version of iOS includes new apps, and iOS 14 is no different. According to 9to5Mac, the biggest addition to Apple’s app library will be a new AR app where users can “get more information about the world around them by using an augmented reality experience on the phone.” Specifically, the site has found references to the Apple Store and Starbucks, which suggests Apple will be partnering with stores like it does for Apple Pay and the Apple Card.
Also pegged for release in iOS 14 is a new fitness app “designed to let users download guided fitness-related videos that will walk them through various workouts.” As reported by MacRumors, the app will debut as part of iOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14, and appears to work in tandem with the existing Activity app. The new fitness app will feature downloadable videos “that cover a range of different workout options and activities, getting guidance on completing those activities on the Apple Watch.”
As far as existing apps, there are sure to be plenty of new features to play with, but one that would be extremely popular is the ability to retract iMessages after they are sent. According to MacRumors, users would be able to take back a message that was accidentally or inadvertently sent, with “Fine print visible to both the sender and recipients indicating that a message has been retracted.”
A report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg also says that Apple will finally be allowing users to change default apps in iOS 14. Previously, iPhone users were forced to use stock apps such as Safari and Mail when opening links, but Apple may be relaxing its stance due to antitrust cases.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS and iPadOS 14: UI and navigation</strong></h2>
Along with the possible release of a Smart Keyboard with Trackpad for the iPad, Mac-style cursors might also be on the way for Apple’s tablet, with the classic arrow pointer and gloved-hand icons reportedly making their way over from the Mac. Furthermore, Apple might be introducing new trackpad gestures that let you quickly switch between apps, reports 9to5Mac.
The Home screen might also be getting a revamp. Short of letting users hide the apps they don’t regularly use, iOS 14 will reportedly include a list view like that in watchOS that “will include a list of all application icons, making it easier for users to see all of their installed apps at once.” 9to5Mac reports that iOS 14’s new list view will include various sorting options, including filters by apps with unread notifications and frequency of use. And Siri will offer suggestions based on time and location.
Along with a new list view, the iPhone might also be getting an iPad-style multitasking screen called Grid Switcher, according to Ben Geskin on Twitter. When you swipe up on the Home indicator, you’ll get two rows of recent apps, and there may be some split-screen functionality as well. As he explains, “When you swipe the app down, screen goes darker and it shows the lock above it, it locks and unlocks as you swipe down.”
Finally, Apple might be opening up its wallpaper selector to third-party artists. Along with new categories such as “Earth & Moon” and “Flowers,” 9to5Mac also reports that developers will be able to provide “wallpaper collections” that are accessible inside Settings.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS and iPadOS 14: Apple Pencil</strong></h2>
There may also be new optical character recognition for Apple Pencil that translates your handwritten notes into text. According to MacRumors, “the PencilKit feature appears to work with any text input field available in iOS, making it compatible with Messages, Notes, Reminders, Calendar, Mail, and more. A floating interface will pop up whenever a text field is tapped with the pencil, allowing for the written input.” There will also be support for third-party apps, according to the rumor.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS and iPadOS 14: HomeKit</strong></h2>
Apple has notably lagged behind Google and Amazon when it comes to smart-home support, but iOS 14 will close the gap a bit with some major new features. Most notably, Apple might finally let users select a default AirPlay audio output option (like a HomePod, for example) so whenever you power up an Apple TV, it connects to the same speaker.
Lights and cameras are also reportedly getting new capabilities. 9to5Mac reports that Night Shift will be coming for smart lighting, allowing bulbs to “automatically adjust light color temperature throughout the day.” Also, HomeKit Secure Video for smart cameras will “likely be upgraded to not only detect people in general, but also offer notifications around detecting specific people in your family,” according to 9to5Mac.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS and iPadOS 14: Accessibility</strong></h2>
9to5Mac has unearthed some interesting accessibility options in iOS 14. Among the new findings are a new feature that will be able to detect sounds such as fire alarms, sirens, door knocks, doorbells, and even crying babies, and presumably alert people with hearing issues.
Also new would be the ability to use the camera to detect hand gestures for controlling things on screen. AirPods could be getting some new accessibility features as well, with a feature called Audio Accommodations for people with “mild to moderate” hearing loss. Finally, iOS 14 will reportedly “offer the ability to run an audiogram on-device to help the users tune the audio.”
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS and iPadOS 14: Compatibility</strong></h2>
Rumors suggest that all devices able to run iOS 13 will also be able to run iOS 14. That includes the iPhone SE, iPhone 6s and later, fifth-generation iPad and later, the newest iPad mini and iPad Air, and all iPad Pro models.
<br />
<h2>
<strong>iOS and iPadOS 14: Release</strong></h2>
Following a public beta schedule, iOS 14 will likely make its debut in the fall when the iPhone 12 arrives.
